Westminster College will co-host the Fourth Annual Generative Anthropology Summer Conference on June 24-26, 2010. The theme of this year’s academic conference is The Anthropology of Modernity: The Sacred, Science, and Aesthetics.

Generative anthropology is a minimalist theory of the human that seeks to understand language, religion, art, and all other forms of cultural phenomena as emerging and evolving from a hypothetical scene of origin. Scholars from Europe, Canada, Australia, and from across the United States will attend. Highlights include keynote lectures from Dr. Eric L. Gans of UCLA and Dr. Vincent Pecora of the University of Utah.

Dr. Gans, who developed the central theory of Generative Anthropology in a series of books and essays, beginning with The Origin of Language (California, 1981) and including a volume treating Science and Faith (Rowman & Littlefield, 1990), will give a plenary address.

The public is invited to attend Dr. Pecora’s lecture entitled Secularism, Secularization, and Why the Difference Matters at 7:00 p.m. on June 24 in the Gore School of Business Auditorium.
Dr. Peter Goldman, professor at Westminster College, organized this year’s conference, along with Brigham Young University professor, Dr. Robert J Hudson. Brigham Young University is co-hosting the conference and selected activities are scheduled at their Provo campus.
