Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk) has scrupulously created music from samples for over eight years. While his music is often categorized alongside mash-ups, or DJ mixes, Gillis focuses more on the art of sampling and developing new tracks that have their own character, surpassing the original elements. Known by underground audiences for several years, it was his 2006 release, Night Ripper when his music crossed over and caught the attention of a larger audience. Girl Talk's most recent record, Feed the Animals, was meticulously edited, creating a seamless album that combines more than 300 samples in the span of 50 minutes, continuing his sonic evolution towards his party-active live show. Audience involvement is a vital component to the live Girl Talk experience, with dancers from the audience surrounding Gillis as he triggers sample and creates mixes new and old out of loops from his hard drive.
