Zach Condon recorded the first Beirut album, Gulag Orkestrar, at the age of 19 when he returned home from a European vacation. Largely influenced by his first exposure to gypsy music while overseas, Beirut's d?but sounds as if it was performed by a 12-piece Balkan orchestra with horns, ukuleles, mandolins, organs, accordions and more. Condon himself sang and performed on all the instruments heard on the album, self-recording it at his home in New Mexico. Described as an "impressive and precocious d?but" by Pitchfork, it wasn't long before Beirut became a favorite by both critics and fans alike. Eventually developing into an eight-piece ensemble, Beirut has since released another full length album, The Flying Cub Club, and a handful of EPs, all of which showcase Condon's European influences and incredible musical talent. The band's appearance on the Twilight Concert Series will mark their first performance in Utah.
