The Coronation of Poppea is a love story - of sorts - based on the notoriously debauched Roman court of Nero. With beautiful melodies and interesting textures, Poppea is the earliest opera to remain in the standard repertoire. Dramatically, it still hits the mark. In fact, the characters from Poppea would make for a great cable TV mini-series! Though the music is over 300 hundred years old, the story, painted so brilliantly by Monteverdi, is ageless, beautiful, tantalizing and timely.
