Dr. Sharma's lecture will address how the academic study of religion, from its very inception, self-consciously set out to be scientific. In the course of its evolution, various senses of the term scientific seem to have come into play, from the physical sciences to the human sciences and even toward the social sciences. Aside from describing and assessing these trends, the presentation will propose a model in keeping with contemporary developments.
