Before the Civil War, a wide variety of coins were in circulation, but as the war progressed, copper, gold and silver coins were hoarded and money changed to meet the new demands of the divided nation. This exhibit explores different types of emergency money such as demand notes and greenbacks, encased postage stamps, fractional currency and Civil War tokens, plus the first U.S. coin to feature the motto "In God We Trust."
