Michael Plyler and Logan Hebner have been interviewing and photographing Southern Paiute elders since December, 2001. Initially their efforts produced an exhibit of fourteen portraits and text panels of the interviews of each individual which has been widely exhibited in both Utah and Nevada. In 2003 they were approached by Utah State University press to turn their efforts into a book. At this juncture, the project expanded to include Chemehuevi peoples in California, the San Juan Paiute in Utah and Arizona, Las Vegas and Pahrump Paiutes, and some isolated members in Caliente, Nevada.
