This year's Spring Concert - Spirit of America, featuring the Choral Arts Society of Utah - promises to be an evening of music portraying the heart and spirit of our American roots. Featured at this concert is Guest Conductor George Welch. The evening's program includes two major works; the first, Song of Democracy by Howard Hanson, is truly a choral classic, featuring the text of Walt Whitman. It was written by commission of the National Education Association and the Music Educators National Conference in commemoration of NEA's one hundredth anniversary and the fiftieth anniversary of MENC. This composition was inspired by two Whitman poems, in particular one that was written to dedicate a public school in Camden, New Jersey. Also on the program is American Tapestry, the musical story of a young America struggling to be free! From the powerful Simple Gifts opening to the conclusion of Shenandoah, enjoy a multi-colored tapestry of 20 folk classics with brief narration. Other choral works include Down by the Riverside, America, Our Heritage, and two choral works by Mack Wilberg.

George Welch received his Bachelors and Masters degrees of Music from Utah State University. He served as music director and conductor of the Salt Lake Symphonic Choir for over 30 years. He served as President of the Utah Music Educators Association, President of the Utah Chapter of the American Choral Director's Association and was honored in 1987 by the State of Utah as the Outstanding Music Educator of the Year.

Members of the 100-voice Master Chorale volunteer their time and talents to provide quality performances, many of which benefit schools and organizations providing humanitarian services to the local area.
