When Mary Lennox is orphaned in India, she is sent to live on her Uncle's Yorkshire estate. But in her new home, as in her old, Mary is ignored and neglected. On exploring her new home, Mary discovers a locked and walled secret garden, also neglected. With the help of a servant boy, Mary sets about restoring the garden, bringing new life to the estate and her family's life.
