Lynn Nottage's Ruined, winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, will receive its Utah premier at the University of Utah's Babcock Theatre. People Productions, Utah's premier African American theatre company, will bring Nottage's gritty vision of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Civil War to the stage. Based on Nottage's personal interviews of women and girls who sought refuge from the war in neighboring Uganda, Ruined focuses on lives devastated by cultural, military, and sexual violence. Directed by University of Utah Professor Emeritus Richard Scharine, People Productions premier of the play will attempt to bring Utah audiences closer to a war and place seldom discussed in America.

Set in a rainforest bar and brothel, 'Ruined' takes place at the height of the Republic of the Congo's brutal civil war. As the violence mounts outside, the women inside the brothel must contend with their own battle scars - from the physical and psychological scars of violent rape to the less tangible devastation of poverty. At the heart of the play, shrewd matriarch Mama Nodi serves as both protector and exploiter of the bar's many "ruined" women. Filled with tension, humor, and ultimately hope, the play's focus on women and girls brings attention both to the plight of the many dispossessed refugees in war-torn Africa, and the particular struggles of females in the face of violence. Contains adult situations and language.
