For centuries a perched eagle, frozen in stone, has viewed the desert sands of Monument Valley, Utah. Beneath this sentinel known as Eagle Rock, Billy Holiday's wife gave birth to a baby boy, Samuel, in 1924. His mother raised Beautiful Baby as a traditional Navajo, teaching him to herd sheep with his sister, having him attend ceremonies, and isolating him so that he never saw a white man until he was eight years old.
