Like many of his movies, Jean-Pierre Melville's 1970 Le Cercle Rouge deftly blends the look of hardboiled American crime films with a distinctly French stylistic virtuosity. Melville elevates his familiar cops vs. robbers plot by thoroughly drenching it in cool gestures and bold cinematography. The film's tense, silent heist sequence is a small masterpiece in itself.
