Barney has an M.A. from the University of New Mexico. He has worked as a consultant for the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Freiburg Teachers Institute and other education institutions. Barney is a member of the Lok'aa'achegai Community Education board and the Smithsonian Indian Programs board. He was honored at the 2007 Navajo Studies Conference.
