Based on historical fact, The Greater Love revolves around Frederick Douglass and the women in his life: his first wife, Anna Murray; his oldest daughter, Rosetta; and his mistress of some thirty years, the German journalist Ottilie Assing. While history may serve as the background and context of the play, the story really focuses on the nature of love, sacrifice, and personal dignity.
