As part of Westminster’s Women’s History Month activities, Carolyn Jessop, former Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) member, will read excerpts and discuss her recent book, Escape, on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory. A book signing will follow the lecture.
Escape is an autobiographical account of Jessop’s upbringing in the polygamist FLDS sect and her flight from the community. At 18, she was forced into an arranged polygamist marriage to man 30 years her elder. When she was 35 years old, she took her eight children and fled. She subsequently sued for custody of her children and became “the first woman ever granted full custody of her children in a contested suit involving the FLDS.” Today, Jessop has become an advocate for women and children looking to leave the FLDS sect.
Throughout the month of March, Westminster will host a variety of Women’s History Month events that will be open to the public. Events will be posted at www.westminstercollege.edu/campusevents. This lecture takes places in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall, Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory.
