In celebration of Tartan Day, April 6, State History will host a brown-bag lecture on Scots in Utah.

Although Scotland is one of Europe's smallest nations, Scottish immigrants to Utah have had a big influence on the state's development. Fred Buchanan will discuss the role of Scots in Utah's geographic, social, cultural, technological, and entrepreneurial development. He will also raise the question: When does ethnicity and patriotism become social prejudice?

Buchanan is Professor Emeritus of Education Studies at the University of Utah.
