When most people think about Abstract Impressionism they think big --- big ideas, big emotions, big action and big scale. Many of the groundbreaking abstract expressionist painters of the post World War II years were famous for pushing the limits of scale, using the canvas as a field (sometimes literally) to act upon. However, this UMFA exhibition of about sixty works presents another side of Abstract Expressionist. The 'Suitcase' designation came about when the venerable New York art dealer (not the poet) Gertrude Stein was asked to suggest an appropriate title for the exhibition. She recalled that the late Larry Aldrich, a well known art collector and founder of the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, liked to travel with paintings small enough to fit in his luggage - suitcase-sized paintings!
