Salt Lake Choral Artists Presents 'Elijah'
May 10, 2008
Mendelssohns 'Elijah' will be performed by the Salt Lake Choral Artists under the direction of Dr. Brady Allred at Libby Gardner Hall on the University of Utah campus. The beautiful and dramatic oratorio will be sung in English (Robert Shaw edition) and accompanied by the Salt Lake Symphony. Soloists include Darrell Babidge in the title role with supporting soloists Kiersten Gunlogson and George Dyer. In an 1838 letter, Mendelssohn wrote, 'I imagined Elijah as a real prophet through and through, of the kind we could really do with today.' After the oratorio's premiere in 1846 it was said in the newspapers: 'Never was there a more complete triumph; never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art.' While it is an obvious nod to the works of Handel and Bach, Elijah is an astounding work in its own right with such choruses as He, Watching Over Israel, Lift Thine Eyes, and Behold, God the Lord. Featuring Darrell Babidge in the title role with supporting soloists Kiersten Gunlogson and George Dyer, you'll be carried away to a glorious world of sound.

The Elijah oratorio is not done as frequently as Messiah. In the past I’ve had to wait years to hear it performed live. When I last heard it the the soloist was the major draw. But under the demanding and gifted work of Dr. Brady Allred the Salt Lake Choral Artists have been able to devote the time and preparation this piece deserves. As a member of his choir I can attest it has been rigorous work, but at the same time pleasure. What glorious music this is, and telling such an incredible story. For the time being my favorite moment in the oratorio is when the men sing "Go return upon thy way" –music so beautifully crafted by Mendelssohn and coupled with the vocal skill Allred magically pulls from the men’s section it is like you are transported to the prophet's side and hearing the commission with Elijah himself.
