Brahms's impassioned masterwork could be called a grand symphony with piano accompaniment. Horacio Gutiérrez, one of the world's foremost pianists, will be in Abravanel Hall to display the full spectrum of tumultuous and lyrical themes provided by this singular concerto. The concert will mark Keith Lockhart's first Music Exposed performance since the series began. Patrons will have the chance to get to know the music a little better as Lockhart and Gutiérrez share their insights and discuss the challenges of presenting such a powerful piece. This engaging after-work program features an earlier start time, a shorter performance, cheaper tickets and a more intimate feel than traditional classical performances. In past seasons, Mr. Gutierrez has given recitals at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Berlin's Philharmonie, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, New York's Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, as well as in Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Cleveland. Last season he performed on subscription and on tour with the Cleveland Orchestra, and returned for his bi-annual concerts with the San Francisco Symphony among many other orchestras. During the 2007-2008 season, in addition to several recitals, he opened the seasons of the Dallas Symphony and the Oregon Symphony and also performs with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Seattle Symphony, and the San Diego Symphony. Also on the program: Dvoøák's Serenade for Strings in E major and Serenade for Wind Instruments in D minor, as well as Johannes Brahms's Concerto No. 1 for Piano in D minor. Helpful Information: Student discounts available. Pre-concert lecture presented at 7:15pm in the First Tier reception room.
