Carl Orff wrote of his masterpiece, 'Everything I have written to date can be destroyed. With Carmina Burana my collected works begin.' Music Director Keith Lockhart leads the Utah Symphony and the Utah Symphony Chorus in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana on a program that also includes Kurt Weill's Second Symphony. The performance of Carmina Burana will feature soprano Maureen McKay, tenor John McVeigh, baritone Lucas Meacham and the Choir of the Madeleine School. The program opens with Kurt Weill's emotional Second Symphony, which hasn't been performed by the Utah Symphony since 1971 under the direction of Maurice Abravanel. The evening closes as the Utah Symphony Chorus and guest soloists join the orchestra to present Carmina Burana. Written in 1936 by Carl Orff and based on a collection of Bavarian monastic poems, the popular piece covers a range of topics as familiar in the 21st century as they were when originally written: the fickleness of fortune and wealth, the brief nature of life, and the joy of spring's return. Currently featured in the new Gatorade commercials, the most well-known movement, 'O Fortuna' has also been featured in many films such as 300, Excalibur, Natural Born Killers and The General's Daughter.
