Mr. Godfrey was one of two painters chosen this year (by the President of the International Art Critics Association) to be shown at the prestigious Alpan International in New York. He represented the United States, last December, at the Florence Biennial, and has won 3 awards in the last four years at Utah's Springville Museum. Godfrey uses the painting process to translate objects, figures and landscapes into physical metaphor. By combining varying degrees of abstraction and representation, he explores identity and memory, interpersonal relationships, societal structures and global connections. Many of Brent's recent paintings begin with loosely imagined aerial views overlaid with an implied history, including land and water masses, civilizations' impact upon the terrain, communication channels and the vestiges of shifting powers. Frequently, his paintings contain layered squares, lined up or floating among organic forms. These sub-compositions represent abstractions of memories, meant to create a dialogue between past and present. The focus is on moments when meaning is revealed and understanding shaped through the triumvirates of intellectual, emotional and physical experience. The detailed, layered surfaces in Godfrey's paintings are a physical record of the mental exercises occurring as he works. His marks are expressions of concerns, losses, fulfillments and desires. They are painted particles of thought, reaching for compositional resolve while leaving questions and struggles exposed.
