This award-winning feature debut by one of Africa's most talented female directors takes place in an unnamed country where the government and the rebels have finally embarked on a path to peace after a decade of atrocities. The film opens as preparations are being made to end a decade of civil war in a fictitious country. A peace agreement is about to be signed and celebrated in a night of reconciliation with a laying down of arms. As the powerful drumming begins, both rebels and government forces gather, bringing with them years of rage, grief, hope, suspicion, and bitterness. Mirroring the political strife in contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa, Fanta Régina Nacro's first feature film boldly presents the reality of human behavior and the moral fortitude necessary to achieve reconciliation. The screening will be followed by a discussion with University of Utah Film Professor, Chris Lippard.
