As the name suggests, this is a dance concert set to pop hits; however, the design behind the concert is not nearly so simple. Being primarily a school of classical ballet, one might think they would want to stick only with the "ballet classics." But anyone who has attended some of The Dance Company's most recent concerts would agree that while maintaining technical integrity, they appeal to a much broader audience.

Dixie Stallings Clegg, the director, received her ballet training from Ballet West founder William F. Christensen, as well as Gordon Paxman and Bene Arnold. She received her BFA in Ballet from the University of Utah, during which time she performed with the Utah Civic Ballet.

Notwithstanding her love for the traditional story-ballets and musical theater, when it comes to creating a dance concert, Dixie tends to agree with New York City Ballet founder, George Balanchine, who was known to de-emphasize the plot in his ballets, while letting "dance and music be the star of the show." Balanchine himself wrote, "We must first realize that dancing is an absolutely independent art, not merely a secondary accompanying one. I believe that it is one of the great arts... The important thing in ballet is the movement itself. A ballet may contain a story, but the visual spectacle is the essential element."

"I love dance for the sake of pure dance itself," Dixie says. "Dancers on a stage create art with patterns, lines, style, and technique. A dance composition is a piece of art, even if it has no story or reason. We do set our performances to a theme in order to compose a collective concert experience, as opposed to a recital of unrelated pieces. The themes help dance be more accessible to those that otherwise may not appreciate it."

The theme, "Puttin' On the Hits," does just that. The music of Led Zeppelin provides a rich backdrop and the inspiration for a powerful opening ballet piece. In contrast to the legendary group Led Zeppelin, the entire concert concludes with an eclectic medley of one-hit-wonders, performed by an array of about a hundred dancers. Truly this is a theme which will be enjoyed by dance novices as well as connoisseurs.
