This class is for adult from ages 18 years old and above

Encaustic is an ancient painting technique using hot beeswax mixed with resin and pigment The word Encaustic comes from the ancient Greek term Encaustikos which means "to burn in" Encaustic has become a popular medium for contemporary artists because of its lush luminosity, and translucent qualities It can be used with collage materials, image transfers and photography along with many other materials and applications Encaustic is permanent and archival yet it can be re- worked easily Layers of molten wax are applied to the support surface and each layer is fused with a heat to the previous layer There will be demonstrations that will cover safety, preparation of surface, heating and mixing colors, creating textures, lines and edge, collage and more Each participant will complete several small encaustic paintings during the workshop*After class, students will have the option of scheduling a 15 to 20 minute private discussion with Jeff for an individual critique, discuss technical issues not covered in the workshop or anything else students may want to discuss about his or her personal art This option is free for class attendees and students who have taken Jeff's classes in the past

Jeff Juhlin is best known for his encaustic painting and printmaking work that evokes a meditative grounded exploration of color, space and mark making His work has been characterized as "Grounded Abstraction" Intellectual and literal interpretations are eliminated from the image with the intention of moving the work towards a minimal essence or ground Jeff Juhlin has been working with the Encaustic medium for the past 12 years and printmaking for over 30 years Jeff has recently completed Residency/Fellowships at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts and Moulin Au Neuf, Auvillar France Jeff has been an Artist in Residence at the Hui Art Center in Maui, Hawaii in 2010 and 2011 His work has included in numerous national exhibitions and collections Born in Salt Lake City, Juhlin studied at the University of Utah and holds a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute He is represented in galleries in Utah, Colorado, Arizona and Virginia Jeff lives and works in Salt Lake City, Utah

David Ruhlman: A History Of The Hidden World is presented as part of the inaugural Utah Biennial: Mondo Utah The 2013 Utah Biennial consists of artistic statements, collections, artifacts and positions that explore the diversity of Utah's cultural landscape
