Ballet West

Whether touring the country, or performing on their home stage, Ballet West seeks to deliver heart-stopping performances of the highest caliber. It originated in1963 as the Utah Civic Ballet. Glenn Walker Wallace was the company's founder and first president. William F. Christensen was the creator of the company and its first artistic director. In 1968, the Federation of Rocky Mountain States chose the Utah Civic Ballet to represent the west and the company was renamed Ballet West. The company has earned a reputation for its innovative new works under its newly appointed Artistic Director Adam Sklute, who brings tremendous experience and a contagious enthusiasm. Under his leadership, the company is comprised of 35 dancers who perform in over 70 performances annually in the Salt Lake Valley and throughout the United States.

    02/10/12- 02/18/12	Ballet West's - Don Quixote Capitol Theatre Ballet West's - Don Quixote Presented by Ballet West at Capitol Theatre February 10-February 18, 2012 Bull fighting, gypsies, comedy, romance and show-stopping dance numbers explode onto the stage of the Capitol Theatre when Ballet West presents one of the world's most well-loved bravura ballets based on Cervantes' classic story, taking audiences on the road with the fanciful adventures of the eccentric Man of La Mancha, the antics of the Village Barber Basilio, and the passions of his beautiful young lover Kitri.
    04/13/12- 04/21/12	Ballet West's "Emeralds" with "Petite Mort" and "Paquita" Capitol Theatre Ballet West's "Emeralds" with "Petite Mort" and "Paquita" Presented by Ballet West at Capitol Theatre April 13-April 21, 2012 Ballet West's dynamic spring production opens with the Utah premiere of George Balanchine's lush and romantic "Emeralds" to music by Gabriel Faure. This is the first ballet in Balanchine's masterful full evening trilogy Jewels. The program continues with the Grand Pas from Marius Petipa's "Paquita," an exciting work of classical variations set to the music of Ludwig Minkus that returns to Ballet West after nearly 30 years.

This year's Innovations will spotlight new works by Ballet West artists, an expanded version of Principal Artist Michael Bearden's Descent, and the return of Susan Shields' vibrant Grand Synthesis.

      I just saw the dress rehearsal and this trio of dances are mesmerizing! Do NOT miss this. Bolero will amaze you. Ballet West's technical skill level is fabulous!

      Friday night's program was superb. The programming of The Four Temperaments followed by Carmina Burana was stunningly effective. Carmina Burana is a complete package - exquisite, heart-pounding music, beautiful voices, and strong, beautifully moving perfomances by the dancers. Particulary, Michael Bearden was as strong and passionate as I've ever seen him. Christiana Bennett is always a joy to watch, as was Annie Breneman. Newcomer Easton Smith gave an elegant, strong, but restrained performance. Would like to see a bit more emotion from him. The dancers in The Four Temperaments were flawless. Never seen the company stronger. Thomas Mattingly, Christopher Rudd, and Haley Henderson Smith were standouts. This is an evening of ballet for the seasoned balletomine as well as the novice.       Ballet West offers some of the cleanest execution of any company in the U.S. The male leads (Chris Sellars, Christopher Ruud, etc.) were exceptional. Likewise for the talented Ms. Sarah Webb, Kate Crews, and Elizabeth McGrath. Definitely the best entertainment in Salt Lake City. Provided that you like ballet. Collapse

      Last night's opening program showed BW at its most brilliant. It was a strong and varied program with opportunities to see the dancers in unexpected and surprising roles. Serenade was particularly breathtaking in the overall presentation and stylistic interpretation. While special recognition needs to go to Ms. Bennet and Ms. Crews for their performances, kudos must also go to the corps who were flawless. Mr. Ruud shone in the Hamlet & Ophelia Pas de Deux. It was delightful to see Ms. Brenneman's take on the challenging role of Ophelia. Although technically strong, I personally would've enjoyed a more dramatic expressiveness in this poignant role. Continuo presented the Company men with a great opportunity to showcase their respective strenghts. Regrettably, while it did this for some (Bravo, Mr.Sellars!)it also showed the need for improvement in others. The Company excelled in Sinatra Songs and had the audience humming in the lobby on leaving. Great evening of dance. Thank you BW! Collapse
