Based on an apocryphal tale from the "Book of Daniel," the opera tells of the young and innocent Susannah and her outcast brother Sam, who live in a small Tennessee town.

      I attended the Momix Botanica show Saturday night at Kingsbury Hall. The short of it is that I should have stayed at home and organized my sock drawer. That would have been more interesting, and certainly would not have cost $90 to do. The longer version is this: Botanica was a disjointed, barely intelligible, pretentious snoozefest. The dancing was mostly mediocre, although there was one performance that held my attention. One. Only one. The seasons theme were scarcely recognizable amid all the nonsensical storytelling. Admittedly, I can only give my opinion about the first half of the show, as I left at intermission, as did a number of patrons. I can only imagine that they, too, figured they could stare at paint drying, grass growing, or take-your-pick-at-another-cliche for free and in more comfort than Kingbury Hall offers. Momix Botanica is full of its own poetic self worth and whimsy, but it did not deliver. Collapse

      Tom Chaplin knows how to captivate the audience and stun them with his powerful voice, while Tim Rice-Oxley, keyboards, is entertaining and talented as always. Tom said it himself that he felt electrified. He kept the audience alive with his charming words and gratitude, almost shock that so many people knew so many of the lyrics to so many songs.       We were 45 minutes late but we had made it. I walked into the room and he was doing one of the two songs I really wanted to hear live, "Drive". The first impression I got was how dedicated he is to what he does, so much so that he can replicate the sound with what appeared to be minimal effort. The beats he was creating had evolved from the original recording done in 1988. Bobby was reproducing what I had heard on the CDs with such precision. Every sound he made was done with a smirk just behind his lips, as if he was thinking, "Wait till they hear this." Of the special guests that appeared I liked the choir the best. Bobby directed each voice of the choir (bass/tenor/alto/soprano) to sing a one measure section. He layered them all together to create an ostinato, and then he vamped over it for 16 bars or so, then with a wipe of his hand silenced them and rebuilt a new pattern.
