Salt Lake Acting Company

Salt Lake Acting Company (SLAC) is a gathering place, a space created to celebrate the collective imagination and encourage the exchange of ideas. They present innovative and thought-provoking plays for Utah audiences. They nurture and employ a community of local professional theatre artists. And, they contribute to the American theatre through commissioning, developing and producing new plays.

Plus, the Salt Lake Acting Company is pretty darn shrewd about the kinds of scripts they promote. I suspect this will be a terrific event. Collapse

      This was a marvel to behold. The first thing that happened as I entered the theatre was a warm welcome by the assistant producer. She showed us around the facility and was extremly kind. They adverstise that they treat their subscribers like royalty and its true. I felt like I was in a different world. Then, when I entered the theatre, I was taken aback by the wonderful set. The stage was deep yet was dressed right up to the front, pulling me into the world of the play. The acting was incredible as well. Everything had meaning to the actors and they created such complex characters. Joe Cronin is to be commended for learning the part in two weeks after the previous actor had to take leave due to the physical strain of the show and David Beecher is to be appluded for his work as well. His charatcer was so intense and the emotions behind his acting, while not always blared out through his lines, still crackled with a type of electricity underneath his acting.       A gorgeous and intimate theatre that boasted all you could want for lighting, set and sound possibilities. Truly a remarkable space. It was very surprising the rest of the show didn't match the caliber of the venue. The script has potential, especially the use of the letters to frame the story. I saw however, two main weaknesses in the story. First, every scene seemed exactly the same length. This created a rhythm that was accentuated by the broken transitions where I half-expected the actors to drop their heads and call "scene." Second, it seemed a little too didactic. Instead of trusting the audience, the show seemed to say "This is my message!" over and over again. Don't get me wrong. I think the script has a lot of potential for a strong show but in the end the direction and acting was disappointing and I was only grateful I bought my ticket for the student price. That $20 I saved bought my dinner to make up for the humdrum entertainment. Will I try SLAC again? probably Collapse
