    Miss Evers' Boys SLCC Grand Theatre Miss Evers' Boys Presented by SLCC Grand Theatre at SLCC Grand Theatre February 1-February 18, 2012 This Utah debut tells the story of the Tuskegee experiment, a U.S. Federal Government secret medical experiment on poor African Americans in the years 1932-1972, designed to study the effects of untreated syphilis. The story is told from the perspective of the small town nurse, Eunice Evers, who is well aware of the lack of treatment, but feels her role is to console the involved men, many of whom are her direct friends.

      Start with a great cast, sprightly choreography, creative sets and staging, and you get a very attractive production of one of the great favorites of musical theater. Director Anne Stewart Mark uses the recent Oliver! revival, rather than the 50-year old version. Naturally, there are some unfamiliar elements, and particularly if you only know the movie. In addition, she seems to have gone back to the original novel, adding dialog that is not in any stage version. Some of that doesn’t seem to quite work out. This Oliver! sounds different as well. The orchestra is small (and immensely talented, as always at The Grand), but Music Director Kevin Mathie (quite simply a national treasure!) has re-written the entire score, making it much darker than we are used to. That is particularly noticeable in the trio reprising “Fine Life.” Fun and games the first time round, bitter and cynical in reprise, with more than a little desperation. Definitely worth seeing.       The term ‘it’s all Greek to me’ had to come from somewhere, right? Even with my ability to recognize such names as Zeus and Hades (thanks to Percy Jackson) a play with characters whose origins date back to 29 B.C.E. intimidates me to no end. The Grand Theatre has thankfully selected a script that makes for a stunning production. While the acting had glorious moments, it was the writing that truly conveyed the darkness of forgetting, fear, and hell alongside the light of love, music, and the power of the word.       This production is great! Ariana Escalante does an incredible job with her powerhouse songs. The guys also hold their own with some great dancing, singing, and getting the audience involved. JD Dumas, 'Jose Puerto Rico', especially stands out amongst the male performers with his high energy and suggestive humor. The richness of the Latino culture, the songs, the humor, and the energy of the cast brought this production to life. This show is a ton of fun and is definitely worth seeing! Collapse

      I first saw this play at Weber State (for which, most of the cast go there and performed there) and I thought it was so fantastic I took my high school theater class to it. That was several months ago and we are still talking about it. I especially recommend this for theater teachers and directors. Every joke will make totl sese to you. But even if you're not a theater teacher, you'll get such a kick out of the acting and songs, you'll be laughing after the play is over. You should definately see this! Collapse
