Utah Opera

Since 1978, Utah Opera has cultivated and entertained a growing audience of over 150,000 annually around the intermountain area. They produce opera with artistic standards of distinction and with a fresh vibrancy - new works for the area as well as the classics. Commitment to the contemporary vitality of opera has focused the Opera's energy into projects which animate the art form for non-traditional audiences, and broaden its conventional horizon for dedicated opera-goers. Their achievements on the modern operatic scene include the 1996 world premiere of Dreamkeepers, a major new operatic work hailed as "an incontrovertible success story" by Rodney Milnes in The Times of London (January 24, 1996), and shadow-interpreted mainstage and school productions for both hearing and hearing-impaired audiences. Utah Opera strives to live up to its name in serving all the people of Utah, regardless of age and geographic location. Each year, the Opera performs for over 80,000 students in Salt Lake City's Capitol Theatre, and in schools throughout Utah. This amounts to approximately 10 percent of all school opera audiences nationwide, according to annual surveys by OPERA America. Not only are these young people developing a greater appreciation of opera, but they will also ensure Utah Opera's audience base in the years to come. Young people and adults alike enjoy opera more when they understand the lyrics. In 1985, Utah Opera became the youngest company in the nation to implement the innovative technique of Supertitles - the English translation of the sung language projected above the stage.

    The Elixir of Love Capitol Theatre The Elixir of Love Presented by Utah Opera at Capitol Theatre March 10-March 18, 2012 The story of L'elisir is of Nemorino, a love-struck youth who cannot seem to hold the attention of his dream girl, Adina. He buys a magic potion but it doesn't seem to work. It only begins to take effect on the other women of the town after news spreads of his rich uncle's passing and this convinces Nemorino that he needs to buy more to use on Adina. But Nemorino has much to learn about elixirs and love, and the confusion he sows with his potion threatens to ruin everything.

    Of Mice and Men Capitol Theatre Of Mice and Men Presented by Utah Opera at Capitol Theatre May 5-May 13, 2012 Like the novel, the story centers around George and his childlike companion Lennie as they struggle to find a path to their simple dream, the dream of a house and farm they can call their own. It is not to be however as Lennie's simple kindness and fear of upsetting those around him unwittingly lead to tragedy and the end of the plans he and George share.

      Distilled down to its most basic story, this rendition of the Magic Flute keeps everything in a positive light for even the youngest viewers. My 4 year old daughter was bewitched by the story and all of us adults laughed throughout the extremely entertaining production. Sparse scenery, but gorgeous costumes and of course, hearing the music and orchestration live made the aria pieces thoroughly enjoyable. Not just for children, I can imagine introducing many adults to opera in this one-hour format. It is an excellent introduction to opera. I can't wait to see what other "mini" opera options are available. Fantastic! Collapse
