"Bateman and Perry are veterans of the earlier production, so it’s interesting to watch them adapt their performances from the compressed confines of the Rose’s Studio Theatre to the much roomier Egyptian stage. Basically they’ve just made everything bigger and more outrageous, but what becomes clear in the transition is that both have very acceptable singing voices, and an intimidating energy level. They fling themselves around the stage, executing Colleen Lewis’s funky dance steps that appear to have been lifted from an old Busby Berkeley film run amok. A chief source of humor is, of course, the hats. Merely keeping them in order is a challenge, but Bateman and Perry do much more: They dance with them, throw them, pile them on top of their heads to change characters fast, hold several in each hand to create a group, even string them on a rope to form a chorus line. Just thinking about it is exhausting..." read more at http://bit.ly/j5EMMG Collapse

"Every now and then, a musical comes along that is quirky enough to break through the clutter, charming enough to get you talking and memorable enough that you want to see it — again and again. Such is the case with "Gutenberg! The Musical!" The summer series "Musicals on Main," a partnership between Plan-B Theatre Company and The Egyptian Theatre in Park City, will see the return of this wildly popular musical comedy, starring Kirt Bateman and Jay Perry..." read more at http://bit.ly/mKWpZE Collapse

"Gutenberg’s novelty, immensely appreciated by the audience, relies on two characters swapping baseball caps with embroidered and stenciled character names indicating that should a Broadway producer pick up the show written by Simon and Davenport, its realization would feature scores of wenches, drunks, and Schlimmer townspeople to pull off the big production numbers. Here, genius of minimalism abounds as the characters manage to pull off set pieces including an heroine with an odd assortment of rats and feces, a vocal quartet, and an 11-character chorus kickline with just two legs..." read more at http://bit.ly/kCicPe Collapse

"The audience is initially greeted by a reasonably bare stage with simply a piano, technical engineer and upwards of 30 hats with various names written across them. As Bud and Doug begin their presentation, they explain their goals and also walk the audience through the process of writing a musical. They introduce all their characters, and entertain us with phenomenal music and unique lyrics. Watching these 2 men work, is like watching a bizarre circus of talent..." -continued at http://www.backstageutah.com/reviews/? p=150 Collapse

"If I had to sum up the play in a single word, I’d call it delightful. Gutenberg! The Musical! is a play based loosely on the life of Johannes Gutenberg, the enigmatic father of the printing press, and the little German town of Schlimmer where he originally operated his wine press. I say “loosely” because the storyline involves not just a historically fictitious reenactment of Gutenberg and his invention, but the story of two the fictional playmakers who had written the Gutenberg play and hoped to get the play produced with a strong opening night pitch that very evening. Accordingly, the actors treat the audience as potentially filled with powerful Broadway producers who could make their dream a reality with a simple nod of the head, making the playmakers’ nervous enthusiasm appear completely genuine. Their chipper, almost naïve candor with the audience managed to break the fourth wall in a very natural manner..." - www.slugmag.com/exclusive/2863/Gutenberg -The-Musical.html Collapse

"You always hear people tell you about laughing at something so hard they started crying or rolling in the aisles, but unless you were there it’s always just a little hard to believe them. Humor is such a subjective thing, and anyone who’s had to sit through at least one supposedly hilarious but in reality painfully dull night of anything is always going to be just a little suspicious. Which is why I’ll understand if you don’t believe me when I say that “Gutenberg! The Musical,” currently playing at the Egyptian Theatre in Park City, made me laugh so hard I could barely breathe. The story of two idiots who are madly in love with what may be the worst musical of all time, “Gutenberg!” is so wrong – the opening scene feels like the greatest extended dead baby joke of all time – and yet so innocently enthusiastic that you can’t stop laughing. It’s like “South Park” through the eyes of the two sweetest 12- year-olds you’ll ever meet..." - www.examiner.com Collapse

"I don’t want to give away any jokes (and this shows is packed with them) so here is as brief a synopsis as I can give without ruining the fun:Two characters named Bud and Doug, the fictional authors of a musical about Johannes Gutenberg, pitch their show to producers who might put their show up on Broadway. Because they don’t have a cast or an orchestra, Bud and Doug wear hats with the nearly 30 characters’ names on them and play all of the roles themselves. In the play-within-a-play, Johann Gutenberg is a wine presser who invents the printing press. An evil monk tries to stop him, and a beautiful girl named Helvetica loves him.The storyline is completely fictitious, which of course makes the earnestness of its fictional creators even more amusing. ... I laughed until I cried and even on a couple of bits until I started to see stars from oxygen deprivation. If you like musicals, you’ll love this show. If you don’t like musicals, you’ll still love this show." - utahtheaterbloggers.com Collapse

I don't know how you can say it has "Nothing to do with Utah Pride". Utah has a very large population of proudfully gay people. I don't think they call it "Gay Pride" anymore because that would exclude those who are not gay, but still proud to be themselves. We have a diverse population in Utah. This is an opportunity for the community to reach out and show their support for people who are different and similar to themselves. Collapse
