Friday night's program was superb. The programming of The Four Temperaments followed by Carmina Burana was stunningly effective. Carmina Burana is a complete package - exquisite, heart-pounding music, beautiful voices, and strong, beautifully moving perfomances by the dancers. Particulary, Michael Bearden was as strong and passionate as I've ever seen him. Christiana Bennett is always a joy to watch, as was Annie Breneman. Newcomer Easton Smith gave an elegant, strong, but restrained performance. Would like to see a bit more emotion from him. The dancers in The Four Temperaments were flawless. Never seen the company stronger. Thomas Mattingly, Christopher Rudd, and Haley Henderson Smith were standouts. This is an evening of ballet for the seasoned balletomine as well as the novice. Don't miss it! Collapse

A crowd pleasing night of music presented by seven great artists. More of this would be fantastic.

First to reviewer "Julie" - You went to a show entitled "Twilit and the Full-Blooded Princess" (obviously a parody), and were upset because of some cliché? It is a parody. Deal with it. I, personally, found the acting to be superb, and found myself laughing out loud several times throughout the show. There were a couple of times the actors could have enunciated better, but otherwise I found it well worth the money. I have been to Poison Ivy Mysteries before, and will definately be returning for the next show! Collapse

I saw "Twilit and The Full-Blooded Princess" at Poison Ivy Mysteries. The script was clichéd, the tickets were overpriced, and the set was flimsy. The cast, however, would have totally saved the show EXCEPT for the poor casting choices for the characters of "Jacob" and "Adam." Both actors should study the art of humor as the difference between "amusing" and "obnoxious" is not that difficult to learn. The rest of the cast, though, was VERY skilled in the art of live comedy! My advice: If you can't find an awesome coupon for this production, spend your $15 elsewhere (like a haunted house). Collapse

Start with a great cast, sprightly choreography, creative sets and staging, and you get a very attractive production of one of the great favorites of musical theater. Director Anne Stewart Mark uses the recent Oliver! revival, rather than the 50-year old version. Naturally, there are some unfamiliar elements, and particularly if you only know the movie. In addition, she seems to have gone back to the original novel, adding dialog that is not in any stage version. Some of that doesn’t seem to quite work out. This Oliver! sounds different as well. The orchestra is small (and immensely talented, as always at The Grand), but Music Director Kevin Mathie (quite simply a national treasure!) has re-written the entire score, making it much darker than we are used to. That is particularly noticeable in the trio reprising “Fine Life.” Fun and games the first time round, bitter and cynical in reprise, with more than a little desperation. Definitely worth seeing.
