An upcoming series of innovative community leadership workshops entitled "From Civility to a New Social and Political Movement: How to be a Societal Transformation Agent" will feature Salt Lake community organizer John Kessler who has presented on community work throughout Utah and is currently developing a wellness program with a team of engaged citizens.

The workshops are hosted as a part of Westminster's S.L.I.C.E. (Student Leaders in Civic Engagement) program to help students hone their community organization skills. S.L.I.C.E. students design projects to address issues about which they are passionate and the Center for Civic Engagement provides them the resources and mentorship they need to turn their ambitions into real social change.

Westminster College will host a free community workshop series on the lyric essay instructed by Andrea Hollander Budy as part of the Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Poetry Series on January 11 through April 26, 2010, at 4:30 p.m. Applications are due by October 15, 2009.

Not quite a poem—not quite an essay— or both a poem and an essay? The lyric essay combines elements of both genres. The workshops will attempt to help participants define the genre for themselves, not only by reading essays and by learning what others have to say about the craft, but also by creating their own lyric essays.

The workshop instructor, Andrea Hollander Budy, is the author of three books of poems: Woman in the Painting, The Other Life and House Without a Dreamer, which won the Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize. Other honors include two poetry fellowships: the National Endowment for the Arts and the Subiaco Award for Literary Merit for Excellence in the Writing and Teaching of Poetry. For the past 17 years, she has been the Writer-in-Residence at Lyon College where she was awarded the Lamar Williamson Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

PROPEL yourself into the artistry of contemporary dance. Stretch the boundaries of both dance and theatre with works by four choreographers including a world premiere by John Jasperse (NY). His emotionally charged and abstract style will challenge your assumptions of how to view Dance. Often incorporating sets and props along with dancers, his choreography has won numerous national awards. Performed to the prelude from Richard Wagner's opera Tristan and Isolde, David Rousseve's 'Bittersweet Chocolate' reminds us of the significance of 'Love. You can't live with it, you can't live without it, but you sure gotta have it to survive.' In addition to these two works will be Alicia Sanchez's dynamically charged and physically daring 'If My Right Hand Would Say What My Left Hand Thought' as well as Joan Woodbury's 'L'Invasion,' a comment on life's darker side, featuring live guitar by the Woodbury Cathy Duo.

Ballet West will be performing Swan Lake with choreography by Marius Petipa, production by Adam Sklute and music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Synergy Dance Company seeks to share dance as an art form with the campus community and the community at large by presenting innovative performances of guest artist, faculty, and student choreography. The company members are dynamic performers as well as imaginative choreographers who present dance a wonderfully diverse and lively performance art. The company also travels to local schools to present entertaining and informative lecture-demonstrations that support Utah's Dance Core Curriculum. UVU's Synergy Dance Company was created in 1993 by Kathie Debenham to give dance students interested in choreography and performance an opportunity to do what they love. Eric Handman's Organism is inspired by science fiction's cyborgs and aliens. Juan Carlos Claudio's Night Moths in an Open Field crosses the border between reality and fiction. Stephen Koester confronts the drama of motion surrounded by a turbulent musical score by Michael Gordon. Donna White's Polvere e Rovine (Dust and Ruins) surveys ancient ruins amidst contemporary Italy.

Each year hundreds of BYU students representing the cultures of North and South America and the South Pacific audition for the opportunity to pay tribute to their ancestors. All Living Legends members are of Native American, Latin American, or Polynesian heritage. The arrival of the pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley was the end of a long journey, but it was the beginning of the settlement of the West. After the Days of '47 Parade, come up to This Is The Place Heritage Park and see what life was like in the settlements of 19th Century Utah. Watch the blacksmith working at his forge, learn how wool was spun into thread, or visit with the furniture maker. Kids can meet farm animals face-to-face at the Petting Corral, ride ponies and choose from a number of hands-on crafts to make. Everyone will enjoy a ride around the village on the train. There will be live music, great food at the Monument Cafe and plenty of things to see and do in 40 original and replica homes and businesses straight out of Utah's history. You might even meet Brigham Young!

This fun-filled parade is one of the largest and oldest in the United States. Colorful floats, bands, horses, clowns, and other entries thrill thousands of spectators each year.

Every year, a committee of volunteers, staff and community organizations work together to produce the Utah Pride Festival. Begun in 1983, the annual event has grown dramatically from those small and rather secretive first gatherings to a 3-day festival with national headliners.

Every year, the Chinese community holds the annual Chinese New Year Celebration, a worldwide recognized culture tradition of more than 4700 years. The Celebration is a main cultural event for the Utah Chinese community. It features music, dance, folk arts, and other performance arts by local Chinese and invited artist from Asia. The grand celebration has become a showcase of Chinese culture, music and art in Utah, and has also played an important role in promoting mutual understanding between Americans of Chinese background and other Americans.

The festival, August 5-7, will attract over 10,000 people who come to enjoy art, food, dance, music and fun at Bountiful City Park. In its 22st year, BDSI promises to deliver the cultural celebration the community has come to expect.

What sets Bountiful/Davis Summerfest International Art and Folk Festival apart from other festivals is the abundance of quality art booths and a variety of ethnic food booths along with the international performing groups. A fine, eye-opening documentary about the violent events that took place in 1975 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Indian activists ended up in an extended standoff with FBI agents, and the result was several deaths, including two federal men whose killing according to many people was never clearly attributed to a specific gunman.

Nothing But a Man stands like a beacon of intelligence and sympathy. It was shot in 1964 at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Ivan Dixon plays a railroad worker who settles down to marry a preacher's daughter, only to find that the system is rigged against him. The film is not condescending or idealizing in its approach; some of the problems of the characters are outside the reality of racism.

This documentary discusses the history of black Mormons, the reasons the LDS Church have historically given for restricting Blacks from the temples and the priesthood, the ripple effects of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s upon some in the Church, and the eventual lifting of the restrictions in 1978.

Triage is the ultimate humanitarian nightmare. Racing against time with limited resources, relief workers make split-second decisions: who gets treatment; who gets food; who lives; who dies. This impossible dilemma understandably haunts humanitarians like Dr. James Orbinski, who accepted the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of Médecins Sans Frontires (MSF) as their President, and was a field doctor during the Somali famine, the Rwandan genocide, among other catastrophes.

As it happens, this smart, feisty thriller begins quite sedately. Hector sits on a lawn chair outside his country home surveying the nearby hillside through a pair of binoculars. But, catching sight of what appears to be a nude woman amidst the trees, he hikes up to investigate. When he's attacked by a sinister figure wrapped in a grotesque pink head bandage, Hector takes refuge in a laboratory atop the hill. He tries to elude the stalker by hiding in a peculiar scientific contraption, and moments later, he emerges - only to find that it's hours earlier. But time has a lot in store for Hector.

In 1536, fleeing from the Inquisition, the alchemist Humberto Oganelli disembarked in Veracruz, Mexico. Appointed official watchmaker to the viceroy, Oganelli was determined to perfect an invention which would provide him with the key to eternal life. He was to name it the Cronos device. Four hundred years later, one night in 1937, part of a wall in a building collapsed. Amongst the victims was a man of strange skin, the color of marble in moonlight, his chest mortally pierced. His last words: Sua tempore. This was the alchemist. The authorities located the residence of the dead man. What they found there was never fully revealed to the public. After a brief investigation, the mansion and its contents were sold at public auction. Never on any list or inventory was the Cronos device mentioned. As far as anyone knew, it never existed.

Filmed over the course of two years, Our City Dream is an invitation to visit the creative spaces of five women artists, each of whom possesses her own energy, drive and passion. These women, who span different decades and represent diverse cultures, have one thing in common beyond making art: the city to which they have journeyed and now call home - New York.

Going beyond the occasional news clip from Burma, the acclaimed filmmaker, Anders Stergaard, brings us close to the video journalists who deliver the footage. Though risking torture and life in jail, courageous young citizens of Burma live the essence of journalism as they insist on keeping up the flow of news from their closed country. Armed with small handycams the Burma VJs stop at nothing to make their reportages from the streets of Rangoon. Their material is smuggled out of the country and broadcast back into Burma via satellite and offered as free usage for international media. The whole world has witnessed single event clips made by the VJs, but for the very first time, their individual images have been carefully put together and at once, they tell a much bigger story. The film offers a unique insight into high-risk journalism and dissidence in a police state, while at the same time providing a thorough documentation of the historical and dramatic days of September 2007, when the Buddhist monks started marching.

The Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts houses the State Folk Arts Collection (exhibited free of charge) as well as the offices of the Utah Arts Council's Folk Arts Program. One hundred paintings, works on paper, and sculpture representing some of the key works from the BYU Museum of Art will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the university's art collection. The exhibition, divided into four sections and organized chronologically according to the acquisition of art works into the collection, tells a fascinating story of the building of a collection.

The exhibit features approximately 40 iconic and rare paintings and sculptures. The collector, John Schaeffer, has traveled the world to build his collection. Works of notable artists, such as John William Waterhouse, Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones and William Holman Hunt will be displayed. A portion of Schaeffer's collection was recently featured at the BYU Museum of Art, but the Springville Museum of Art will display some of his new acquisitions in a new environment. John Schaeffer's belief that art viewing and appreciation is a search for beauty and meaning, inspired the title of the exhibit.

An exhibition highlight is the debut of one of the UMFAs newest acquisitions, a late XXVIth Dynasty Egyptian sarcophagus.

What do jade, chess, the camera obscura and Hinduism have in common? They were all exchanged on the Silk Road, of course! The Silk Road was a series of routes that crossed through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia from the first millennium B.C.E. through the second millennium C.E. In this alluring exhibition, visitors of all ages can explore objects from the Museum's permanent collection that either traveled on the Silk Road or reflect the religions, technologies, and goods that were exchanged en route. Families and students will enjoy a treasure hunt through the exhibition and other galleries, get educational insight through an easy-to-use audio tour, and even satisfy their senses at a spice sniff station.

Love of the western landscape has to do with the capacity of the viewer to experience vast space. To appreciate the desert terrain, one has to be comfortable with an inscrutable universe. Among those artists challenged by Utah's Red Rock Province, few were more successful than the visiting artists: Maynard Dixon, Edgar Payne, Conrad Buff, Sven Birger Sandzen and William R. Leigh, just a few of the artists represented in this exhibition.

Born in 1904 and raised in Salt Lake City, Pablo O'Higgins studied art under LeConte Stewart before moving to Mexico City, where he became the only Anglo artist welcomed by the Mexican Mural Movement. O'Higgins was Diego Rivera's lead assistant until he left the mural group to form the anti-Fascist Taller de Grafica Popular with Leopoldo Mendez. The group promoted the graphic arts and was committed to combating racism and championing the underprivileged. Virtually unknown in Utah today, his stature as an artist 'of the people' continues to grow and his work is enormously popular in Mexico.

Types and Shadows: Intimations of Divinity, encourages viewers to participate in the process of seeking out and finding meaning in the symbols, metaphors and veiled visual references that point to the divine mission of Jesus Christ. The exhibition is in the Warren and Alice Jones and Paul and Betty Boshard galleries on the museum's lower level.

Mirror, Mirror: Contemporary Portraits and the Fugitive Self, features 56 works of art by 32 local and international artists who trace the influences of rituals, facades, social media and the family on the formation of individual identity. Ultimately this exhibition examines what it means to be human beneath the veneers of identity accumulated in society.

Las Artes de Mexico: From the Collection of the Gilcrease Museum is an exhibition that explores the richness of Mexican heritage, from the ancient work of the Mayans and Aztecs through the twentieth century. The exhibition includes a broad array of artifacts such as woven fabrics, masks, and religious objects from Mesoamerica (pre-Conquest Mexico) as well as paintings by modernist masters like Rufino Tamayo, Jose Clemente Orozco, and Diego Rivera. Complementing Las Artes de Mexico will be three companion exhibitions at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, including: salt I, Pablo O'Higgins and the Mexican Muralist Movement, and Community: Eat, Work, Play.

Community: Eat, Work, Play is a collaborative exhibition between the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and three local community groups. Utah Museum of Fine Arts educators, working with elementary and secondary students, will create large-scale murals to be installed in the education gallery. Each group will take on one aspect of the theme, either eat, work or play, and visually explore how that idea is represented in their community.

The history of one of the world's most unique buildings, the Tabernacle on Temple Square, is told in this new exhibition. The exhibit opened simultaneously with the rededication of the Tabernacle after renovation. It examines the architectural influences on the Tabernacle's design and construction, displays historical photographs that document the construction progress, pays tribute to the sacrifice and dedication of the pioneer workers, and honors the Church Presidents who have spoken from its pulpits.

I Am a Child of God, is an interactive exhibit for families. This exhibit is based on the words of the first verse of the song 'I Am a Child of God,' and is designed to help visitors learn about the Plan of Salvation at a very basic level. Visitors will understand that each earth life has a purpose and that they should strive to learn about and fulfill that purpose. The exhibit is full of interactive elements illuminating these ideas.

New visiting faculty member, Tawni Shuler, is presented in this exhibition that exposes her works of the past few years along with works completed while at UVU. A graduate with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University, and a native of Wyoming, Shuler brings a concern for connection with earth-place in her works. Having been raised with the rigors and unique experiences of farm life in Wyoming, Shuler combines her sense of aesthetic responsiveness with the life and death, dirt and skin experiences of her upbringing. She chooses to call this exhibit Ecotone and offers this definition: Ecotone is the place where forest meets meadow, desert touches river. It's the frontier where communities of humankind and wild animals touch each other. It's that shaky space between who we are and who we appear to be, the gap between reality and mystery, the certain and the imagined. Shuler's work ranges in size from small to enormous and will occupy two of the galleries in the museum. Her work carries a curious luminosity. While virtually non-objective, she nonetheless acknowledges Caravagio and Turner as sources of inspiration.

The 38th Annual Utah All-State High School Art Show celebrates the best artistic talent and creativity of Utah's youth.

Young Artist Chamber Players, a chamber orchestra of advanced high school students, will present an evening of classical music. The guest artist for the evening is Karlyn Bond, pianist.

Weber State University Department of Performing Arts presents the Utah Saxophone Quartet. The quartet use the French saxophone quartet instrumentation with Ray Smith on soprano, Daron Bradford on alto, David Feller (WSU Faculty) on tenor, and Gaylen Smith on baritone. All of the members of the ensemble double on multiple woodwinds, and the quartet will often add clarinet quartets, flute quartets, or mixed woodwind quartets to concert programs. Each member of the quartet is extensively active in the Utah recording scene, and all are mainstays in the Utah performance arena. The Utah Saxophone Quartet was formed at Brigham Young University in 1983 by Ray Smith, who was hired to teach saxophone at BYU in 1982. The Utah Saxophone Quartet has been a pioneering ensemble since that time. The current personnel has been stable since about 1985, and all the members of the quartet are BYU School of Music alumni. In fact, they have been friends since high school and have studied with several common teachers, including Steve Allen and David Randall, former director of the BYU School of Music. They have recently completed a double-disk CD, Playing Tribute, which will be available for purchase after the concert. This project has been a labor of love and has brought to recorded history many of the pieces that have thrilled live audiences for the past two decades.

Billy Joel and Elton John, the most successful and longest-running concert pairing in pop history, will reunite for their Face 2 Face tour at the Energy Solutions Arena. Billy and Elton open the concert with a series of duets, playing twin pianos and trading vocals. Each artist then performs a set with his own band. A grand finale brings the two superstars and their supporting musicians back together for a closing encore. This includes some of both Billy and Elton's greatest hits along with an unpredictable selection of rock and roll classics.

The 'New World' Symphony is one of the most popular symphonic pieces in the modern repertoire. Highlighting Native American and African American music, with folk music overtones of Dvorak's native Bohemia, this piece is perhaps a musical parallel to the metaphorical 'New World' melting pot.

With an offstage trumpet doubling the first trumpet melody 'in the distance' and a funeral march based on the children's song 'Frère Jacques', Titan showcases the darker side of Romanticism.

Written in honor of Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni, Verdi's Requiem explores powerful emotions such as forgiveness, mercy, loss, and sorrow, and includes an inescapable, trumpeted call to Judgment in the Tuba mirum. The combination of brass, timpani, and chorus in this call build passionately to produce a moment of the loudest unamplified music ever written.

The Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation is pleased to announce plans for the XV Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition to take place in Salt Lake City. During this year, the Bachauer Foundation will celebrate 35 years of producing piano competitions, bringing the best musicians in the world to Utah to compete for cash, prizes, and fame. The XV Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition, for pianists ages 19-32. 35 applicants will be selected to compete in this prestigious event, vying for cash prizes exceeding $80,000 US. The chosen competitors will perform over a two-week period for an international jury of 10 distinguished artists, playing in two rounds of recitals. There are no requirements of repertory, offering the competitors full opportunity to display their artistry and virtuosity in music of their own choice. No elimination will occur until the final round, when six finalists will each perform a concerto in Abravanel Hall with the Utah Symphony in two nights of concerts. The winners will be announced on the second night.

Bravo Opera will be featuring opera overtures by Wagner and Rossini, highlights from Carmen, Mikado, and La Boheme, with soloists Lawrence Johnson, Carol Ann Modesitt, and SUU students.

Roy L. Halversen Young Artist Concert plus Brahms: Symphony No. 4, movements 1, 3 and 4. The Halversen is held annually in memory of Roy L. Halversen, a beloved music educator who came to Cedar City to teach after years of training at Juilliard and in Germany. He stayed in Cedar City for years, building the string program at Southern Utah University and establishing a standard of musical excellence in Cedar City. He became a teacher and mentor to countless young musicians throughout the area.

The Parker Quartet closes out the Chamber Music Society's 29th season with a program of Dvorak, Schoenberg and Schumann. They will also be doing an extended residency in local schools.

The Chamber Music Society of Logan presents an evening featuring Zuill Bailey (one of the world's finest cellists), joined by Utah State University's String Quartet in Residence for the program's second half.

The Salt Lake Symphony presents the Vienna Ball Gala Fundraiser.

From Caesar to the Gods presents works by Mozart, Elgar, and Respighi.

The Salt Lake Symphony presents Farewell with works by Haydn, Corigliano, and Hindemith.

The Symphony Goes Swing with music by Ellington/SayreGershwin Cuban Overture, Rodgers Slaughter on 10th Avenue, Gershwin/Riddle, Bernstein, arrangements with the Jerry Floor Quartet.

La Traviata, which literally means 'the woman who strayed,' is based on the novel La Dame aux Camelias by Alexandre Dumas. The classic opera was first performed on March 6th, 1853, in Venice, and it was an utter failure! It was later revised in 1856 and presented at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, followed later that year with a premiere in New York. Verdi had faith that his creation would be successful with time. Verdi was correct. The popularity of this opera has spanned almost 16 decades. La Traviata is third on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America.

Salt Lake City's Rire-Woodbury Dance Company was founded in 1964 and is 45 years old this year. It has been a part of the CCMA season many times in past years. Rire-Woodbury has always strived to meld creative, innovative modern dance with a variety of choreographic styles. The company's repertoire ranges from minimalism to multimedia dances. CCMA always looks forward to their arrival because they bring such color and flavor to our season.

UVU Symphony Band will be performing Concert.

Utah Chamber Artists will feature the talents of a young musician who demonstrates exceptional promise, enthusiasm and dedication to the musical arts. This is the second annual concert bearing Beverly Sorenson's name. Utah Chamber Artists pays tribute to Beverly's tireless devotion in providing young people an opportunity to enjoy the rewards that only the arts can impart. The choir and orchestra will perform music by American composers on the second half of the program.

Utah Chamber Artists combine with guest soloists David Porter (violin) and Vedrana Subotic (piano) to offer music of Bradford, Durufle, Redford, and Saint-Saens.

This performance features Utah Chamber Artists together with Murray and Cottonwood High a cappella choirs.

The Murray Shakespeare Festival will feature a green show royalty processional and folios presented by Murray School District elementary schools, prior to A Midsummer Night's Dream produced by the Murray High Drama Department.

With fabulous live music and gorgeous costumes, Carlota Santana's Flamenco Vivo, a premier Spanish dance company, will bring a taste of authentic flamenco to Ogden.

Malian guitarist Habib Koit is one of Africa's most popular and recognized musicians. Born in this Senegalese town situated on the railway line connecting Dakar to Niger, Habib comes from a noble line of Khassonk griots, traditional troubadours who provide wit, wisdom and musical entertainment at social gatherings and special events. He says 'I'm curious about all the music in the world, but I make music from Mali... Usually, Malian musicians play only their own ethnic music, but me, I go everywhere. My job is to take all these traditions and to make something with them, to use them in my music'.

The 8th annual Art With Heart concert is coming up. All proceeds from this concert go to Shriners Hospital to benefit children. To date around $180,000 has been raised for the hospital by The Dance Club, The Winner School, and Dance Impressions through this concert. This year Art With Heart will feature 400 dancers, 3-18 years old, performing a variety of dance styles. The talent is impressive, the show is fun and upbeat, and you couldn't find a better cause!

Eileen Ivers has been described as the 'Jimi Hendrix of the violin.' The Bronx-born Irish-American is a nine-time All-Ireland fiddle champion, original music star of Riverdance, a founding member of Cherish the Ladies, and a best-selling recording artist. Her 2009 tour, Beyond the Bog Road, is a riveting multimedia performance that celebrates Ireland with an all-star assemblage of Irish and Old Time musicians, singers, champion step dancers and cloggers.

The Utah Valley University Jazz Ensemble, an ensemble comprised of music majors and talented non-music majors, is committed to the study and performance of the finest standard and contemporary popular idiom works for Jazz Band. All wind and percussion students must be a member of the Symphony Band in order to participate in the Jazz Band.

The Symphony Band is dedicated to the performance of the finest traditional and contemporary wind band literature. This ensemble, which is open to all university students by audition, provides members the opportunity to broaden performance and teaching skills by experiencing exemplary literature at the highest-level. The Symphony Band performs at least two concerts each semester and participates in an annual concert tour.

The Utah Valley University Symphony Orchestra offers talented instrumental music students the opportunity to play in one of the state's premier groups. The UVU Symphony Orchestra is under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Bryce Rytting. Dr. Rytting has a distinguished career as conductor of the Utah Valley Symphony, performing regularly in the Covey Center for the Performing Arts.

The Percussion Ensemble at Utah Valley University is comprised of percussion majors and non-majors with previous ensemble experience. Don't miss their spring concert at the Ragan Theater.

Formerly the A Cappella Choir, the Utah Valley University Choral is UVU's largest auditioned choir, with around 80 singers. This choir has a long tradition of excellence at UVU, and is often called upon for special projects. In Spring of 2006, they sang in an original stage production, 'Echos of American Slavery.' In the fall of 2006, they premiered an original work, 'Fresh Courage Take,' in Bountiful, Salt Lake and Provo.

The Utah Valley University Chamber Orchestra performs with the other ensembles in the Ragan Theatre in a concert at the end of each semester.

Performing an average of 15 times per year, the Utah Valley University Chamber Choir has appeared at such venues as the Temple Square Concert Series, with Kurt Bestor at UVU and in the Delta Center, Libby Gardner Hall, Thanksgiving Point, the Orem Library, and the Provo Tabernacle. In the spring they generally tour with the MasterWorks Chorale on a recruitment tour for UVU.

Lending their remarkable pipes to classical, folk, Celtic and pop, the Irish-born trio - Mathew Gilsenan, James Nelson and Daryl Simpson ? sing everything from Bob Dylan to 'Danny Boy.' Performing with what Wisconsin's The Capital Times calls 'the practiced ease of singers who know each others voices like a comfortable pillow,' these unpretentious performers deliver a 'high octane' (The Ulster Herald) show.

Leon Redbone is one of the worlds most mysterious and fascinating performers and pop culture icons. He is known for his distinctive fedora, dark glasses, mustache, and scruffy baritone voice. This Neo-Vaudevillian crooner captivates audiences with a combination of pre-world war II ragtime, urban folk, jazz, blues, and Tin Pan Alley classics. Accompanied by Paul Azaro on piano, this performance blends lyrical satire, cynicism, comedy and skilled instrumentals.
