One of the largest and best attended art museums in the Mountain West, the Museum of Art offers a dynamic exhibition schedule that includes displays of its permanent collection, world-class traveling shows and unique temporary exhibitions that fulfill the Museum's unique mandate. One of the Museum of Art's most important roles is its contribution to the academic mission of Brigham Young University. From the research and study of the artworks in their collection, to the teaching and learning that occurs in their classrooms and galleries, the Museum plays an important role in the academic pursuits of many students at BYU. At the same time, the Museum connects to broad community audiences through its varied exhibitions and educational programming.

These images and thoughts are the focus of the upcoming People in A Hard Land exhibition.

As an introduction to the arts of Islamic culture, this exhibition inspires both the general public and the specialist. Beauty and Belief poses the question "What makes Islamic Art Islamic?"       02/21/12- 05/31/12	Butterfly Brigham Young University Museum of Art Butterfly Presented by Brigham Young University Museum of Art at Brigham Young University Museum of Art February 21-May 31, 2012 Seoungho Cho's video artwork blends West and East by overlaying the pulsing drum solo from Iron Butterfly's famous 1960s rock song "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" with a Buddhist drumming ritual. The video focuses on the mesmerizing drummer, whose movements resemble those of a butterfly beating its wings in the air. Born and educated in Korea with graduate studies in New York, Cho explores the connections of 1960s rock-and-roll with Asian philosophy in this intense yet contemplative work.

Object of Devotion: Medieval English Alabaster Sculpture, the BYU Museum of Art's next religious art exhibition, comes from London's Victoria and Albert Museum, owner of the largest medieval alabaster sculpture collection in the world.
      06/01/12- 10/06/12	e.g.: Will Lamson Brigham Young University Museum of Art e.g.: Will Lamson Presented by Brigham Young University Museum of Art at Brigham Young University Museum of Art June 1-October 6, 2012 Lamson explores a variety of oppositions as he floats down the Delaware River in an attempt to create the illusion that he is standing on the water. In the high angle shots, it appears that he has overcome the forces of nature and is standing calmly on the water, an action comparable to one of Christ's most famous miracles from the New Testament.

Featuring sixty alabaster panels and free-standing figures, these objects are drawn from the world's largest collection of medieval alabasters the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Early video gaming, or pixel-based imaging, did not intend to be simple or minimal. It intended to communicate as much visual information as possible.
      06/15/12- 06/16/12	Family Art Festival: Journey through the Arts of Islam Brigham Young University Museum of Art Family Art Festival: Journey through the Arts of Islam Presented by Brigham Young University Museum of Art at Brigham Young University Museum of Art June 15-June 16, 2012 This summer the museum's annual Family Art Festival will return inspired by the themes in Beauty and Belief: Crossing Bridges with the Arts of Islamic Culture. Participants are invited to the museum to listen to stories of the Islamic world, participate in Middle Eastern music and dance demonstrations, create Islamic art masterpieces, talk with local Muslims about Islamic culture, and sample Middle Eastern food in the MOA Cafe.
      07/20/12- 12/01/12	In the Shadows of Timpanogos: Photographs by John Telford Brigham Young University Museum of Art In the Shadows of Timpanogos: Photographs by John Telford Presented by Brigham Young University Museum of Art at Brigham Young University Museum of Art July 20-December 1, 2012 For Utah photographer John Telford, Mt. Timpanogos and its surrounding canyons have been a source unending inspiration and quiet contemplation. Telford contrasts the stability of geologic formations with variation in atmosphere, color, and vegetation over time and season.
      12/14/12- 05/04/13	Alex Webb: The Suffering of Light: Thirty Years of Photographs Brigham Young University Museum of Art Alex Webb: The Suffering of Light: Thirty Years of Photographs Presented by Brigham Young University Museum of Art at Brigham Young University Museum of Art December 14, 2012-May 4, 2013 This traveling exhibition organized by Aperture Foundation, explores the thirty year career of Magnum photographer Alex Webb. The exhibition will feature 45 large pigment prints that exhibit the unique energy and emotional vibrancy of Haiti, the Caribbean, the U.S.-Mexico border and other cultures on the margins of western civilization.
