Peking Acrobats

Presented by Onstage Ogden at Val A. Browning Center for the Performing Arts

Feb 02, 2023

For over 30 years, THE PEKING ACROBATS have redefined the ancient art of Chinese acrobatics, raising it to new heights while integrating 21st century technology. You’ll be astounded by the “human chair stack” – a daring balancing act atop a precarious pagoda of chairs — and captivated by trick-cycling, contortion, precision tumbling, juggling, and gymnastics. The New York Post says THE PEKING ACROBATS “push the envelope of human possibility.” With their gravity-defying skills, these internationally acclaimed athletes have dazzled sold-out crowds around the world and appeared in numerous TV shows and films, including the Ocean’s Eleven trilogy. Accompanied by musicians playing traditional Chinese instruments, their awe-inspiring acrobatics coalesce with time-honored music and high-tech special effects, creating exuberant entertainment for all ages. Boost your joy and elevate your family fun with THE PEKING ACROBATS.

awfultune

Presented by Kilby Court at Kilby Court

Feb 02, 2023

This event is 18+ only. Proof of age is required for entry. Layla Eden (known musically as awfultune), is nothing short of a resplendent musical mirror of her own human experience. Floating a few covers on through the SoundCloud stratosphere circa 2017, Eden promptly adorned themself with the awfultune moniker, on account of their belief that their efforts would fall on deaf ears. Wrong she was. In 2022 she now touts over three million monthly footfalls on Spotify—officially evolving out of indie bedroom-pop obscurity. Born and bred in upstate New York, Eden’s musical evolution is intrinsically entwined with their own adapting identity. From plaintive to sweetly serene, their chromatic catalog of dreamlike compositions has succinctly echoed their transition from male to female—becoming whom she’s always been. She is both an austere champion of the LGBTQ+ community and a perennial advocate for anyone who’s simply ever felt alone or estranged from…

All in a Day: St. George

Presented by Utah Opera at The Electric Theater Center

Feb 02, 2023

Utah Opera resident artists (Jasmine Rodriguez, Winona Martin, Jehu Otero, Tshilidzi Ndou, and Laura Bleakley) will perform All in a Day, a concert filled with musical numbers from opera and musical theatre as well as two short operas, one of them commissioned especially for this traveling concert. The concert scenes progress from morning through evening of a very good day: one that includes both a dog adoption and a birthday party! The short opera about dog adoption Pepito was composed by Nicolas Lell Benavides to a libretto by Marella Martin Koch.  A couple visits an animal shelter to adopt a dog, and the wife makes a particular connection with a lonely dog who misses his Spanish-speaking former owners. The second short opera, Happy Birthday, was commissioned by Utah Opera from Utah composer Andrew Maxfield and librettist Ruthie Prillaman. The opera addresses the controversy and resolution of the question about who really…

Hub New Music

Presented by BYU Arts at Harris Fine Arts Center

Feb 03, 2023

Called “contemporary chamber trailblazers” by the Boston Globe, Hub New Music, composed of flute, clarinet, violin, and cello, is forging new pathways in the 21st-century repertoire. The ensemble’s ambitious commissioning projects and “appealing programs” (The New Yorker) celebrate the rich diversity of today’s classical music landscape. Its performances have been described as “gobsmacking” (Cleveland Classical), “innovative” (WBUR), and “the cutting edge of new classical music” (Taos News). Their performance at BYU will feature a world premiere of a piece composed by faculty member Kevin Anthony.

Emmanuel Pahud Performs Mozart’s Magic Flute Fantasy Finishing Touches Rehearsal

Presented by Utah Symphony at Abravanel Hall

Feb 03, 2023

Experience a behind-the-scenes look at the process of bringing our concerts to the stage during our Finishing Touches rehearsals. This is a working rehearsal and selections from the weekend’s program will be made at the discretion of the conductor. Emmanuel Pahud—Principal Flute of the Berlin Philharmonic, one of today’s most adventurous and exciting musicians, and the Utah Symphony’s 2022-23 Artist-in-Association—joins for beloved melodies from Mozart’s The Magic Flute as well as Nielsen’s nimble and lively Flute Concerto. While Berg’s Lyric Suite is a coded and romantic message to his illicit lover, there is nothing subtle about Janácek’s Sinfonietta, which celebrates the newly liberated Czechoslovakia with blazing glory and no fewer than a dozen trumpets! Continuing Thierry Fischer’s annual exploration of Haydn symphonies, No. 12 packs abundant radiance and joy into just 15 minutes.

Will Sheff / Okkervil River

Presented by Urban Lounge at Urban Lounge

Feb 03, 2023

After nine critically acclaimed albums, after twenty bandmates, after countless bars and clubs and theaters and festivals, after two full decades, Will Sheff is letting Okkervil River drift out to sea with Nothing Special, a rich and cinematic collection that marks the acclaimed indie songwriter’s first release under his own name. Written through a period of painful loss and deep transformation and recorded with a mix of old friends and new collaborators (including singer/songwriter Christian Lee Hutson, Dawes drummer Griffin Goldsmith, and Death Cab For Cutie pianist Zac Rae), the record represents more than just a change in name; it’s an act of liberation and self-determination, an emotionally raw reckoning with grief, identity, and hope that blurs the lines between fiction and autobiography, surrealism and humor, stoicism and a deepening spirituality.   Formed in Austin, TX, Okkervil River embraced both frenetic rock and cerebral complexity as bandmates came and went…

L.A. Theatre Works - Lucy Loves Desi: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Sitcom

Presented by Park City Institute at George S. & Dolores Dore Eccles Center for the Performing Arts

Feb 04, 2023

The hilarious, true story behind one of America’s most beloved TV comedies. Playwright Gregg Oppenheimer, son of “I Love Lucy” creator Jess Oppenheimer, spins this fast-paced, witty tale of Lucy and Desi’s battles with CBS over the pioneering ideas that changed the face of television forever. For one, Lucy insisted Desi Arnaz, her Cuban-born bandleader husband, be her TV co-star instead of the “All-American” leading man preferred by the network. Additionally, the couple wanted the show filmed in Hollywood, where they planned to raise a family, not broadcast live from New York like other major TV programs of the time. They demanded and won the right to own the show themselves. Their writers incorporated Lucy’s real-life pregnancy into the program’s storyline—an absolute taboo in 1950s America—resulting in the highest audience share ever recorded. And they proposed the unheard-of notion of airing “reruns” on the network to accommodate Lucy’s mid-season maternity…

Feb 03 - Feb 04, 2023

John Craigie

Presented by The State Room at The State Room

Feb 04, 2023

Portland, OR-based singer, songwriter, and producer John Craigie adapts moments of solitude into stories perfectly suited for old Americana fiction anthologies. Instead of leaving them on dog-eared pages, he projects them widescreen in flashes of simmering soul and folk eloquence. On his 2022 full-length album, Mermaid Salt, we witness revenge unfurled in flames, watch a landlocked mermaid’s escape, and fall asleep under a meteor shower. After selling out shows consistently coast-to-coast and earning acclaim from Rolling Stone, Glide Magazine, No Depression, and many more, his unflinching honesty ties these ten tracks together. The album comes from the solitude and loneliness of lockdown in the Northwest. Someone whose life was touring, traveling, and having lots of human interaction is faced with an undefinable amount of time without those things. So, he began writing new songs and envisioning an album that was different from his past records. The sound of everyone playing…

Presented by Ice Casles Utah at Soldier Hollow Legacy Park

Jan 14 - Feb 04, 2023

Each year, Ice Castles brings fairy tales to life for hundreds of thousands of families across North America. Our primary goal at Ice Castles is to make people smile. Since 2011, Ice Castles has been dedicated to creating an experience that will live on long after the ice melts. For all who enter through our icicle-adorned archways, we hope the time spent at Ice Castles is a source of joy and inspiration. Bringing joy to others has been our mission since the company’s inception. Founder, Brent Christensen, crafted his first icy creation in the front yard of his home to bring happiness and joy to his children. After moving from sunny California to snowy Utah, Christensen did what any father of six stir-crazy kids with cabin fever would do. He built an ice cave in his yard to get his kids out of the house. His stroke of genius worked!…

“Shepard’s masterwork… It tells us a truth, as glimpsed by a 37-year-old genius.” – New York Post “I wanted to write a play about double nature, one that wouldn’t be symbolic or metaphorical or any of that stuff. I just wanted to give a taste of what it feels like to be two-sided. It’s a real thing, double nature. I think we’re split in a much more devastating way than psychology can ever reveal. It’s not so cute. Not some little thing we can get over. It’s something we’ve got to live with.” – Sam Shepard

Feb 02 - Feb 04, 2023

Dustbowl Revival has always been about pushing the boundaries of what American roots music can be. After celebrating over a decade of sonic adventuring and playing thousands of shows together in ten countries and counting, the group collected a devoted fanbase coast-to-coast. After throwing five of their own virtual Sway-At-Home festivals during the shut-down featuring nearly forty artists, the always evolving group of string and brass players led by founding members Z. Lupetin, Josh Heffernan, Ulf Bjorlin are excited to welcome a new wave of talent to the band, after emerging from a pandemic touring hiatus. After spending years on the road, selling out hometown shows at LA’s famed Troubadour, headlining festivals and wowing crowds from Denmark to China, Dustbowl Revival never stopped making their joyful, booty-shaking soul songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads that lift up their transcendent live shows.Even so, with the bands emotional new single “Beside You” and 2020’s…
