Working in various media, from painting and sculpture to photography and mixed media, the artists featured bring a nuanced and multifaceted history to light. Many Wests highlights many voices—including artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, Asian American, Latinx, and LGBTQ+—who stake a… |

Grief: A Stupid Process No One Wants To Do Presented by Salt Lake City Public Library Chapman Branch at Salt Lake City Public Library Chapman Branch May 06 - Jun 16, 2023 Artwork by Hyrum Despain • Exhibit runs from May 6 to June 16, 2023. ARTIST STATEMENT: The truth is that I seldom paint. Instead, a younger, more confused version of me paints. Art has been an outlet for me to express the confusion I have felt from the chaos of my home life as a child. Acrylic paint, oil pastels, soft pastels, and pens are all tools I use to articulate myself. The intense emotions I felt growing up are muddied by years and years of neglect. I can’t pinpoint exact traumatic moments, so instead, I try to paint overarching feelings and thoughts. This leads to my pieces looking as though I was trying to remember a bad dream I had last night. When viewing my art, you see floating heads, appendages coming from seemingly nowhere, objects made of haze, eyes looking directly through you, and open mouths screaming as… |

Haimaz, Heimr, Hjem, Heem, Hām, Home
Haimaz, Heimr, Hjem, Heem, Hām, Home Presented by Utah Museum of Contemporary Art at Utah Museum of Contemporary Art Apr 10 - Jul 15, 2023 Haimaz, Heimr, Hjem, Heem, Hām, Home seeks to explore the notion of homes that are real, constructed, remembered, displaced, damaged, and imagined through the lens of the Old English word hām, which refers to a place where many souls are gathered. In a time of cultural, political, economic, environmental, and psychological ‘home’ instability for many, and as people emerge from homes where they were isolated post-pandemic, this topic feels particularly timely. Home can be both a social and cultural construct that is influenced by family, community, geography, economics, politics, and personal experiences. For some, it is a physical space of comfort, refuge, and safety. Home can also be a feeling, a sense of belonging and connection within a community, or it can be a site of danger, longing, loneliness, confinement, trauma, or displacement. The artists in this exhibition challenge traditional and fixed notions of home by addressing issues of housing affordability, gentrification, urbanization, migration,… |

A Way of Working
A Way of Working Presented by Utah Museum of Contemporary Art at Utah Museum of Contemporary Art Apr 10 - Jul 15, 2023 “A great building must begin with the unmeasurable, and in the end, be unmeasurable.” —Louis Kahn The presented works celebrate the conception of ideas in the design process of Sparano + Mooney Architecture, a collective of architects, artists and craftspeople in the American West. The constructs exhibited are exemplary of those that guide the creation of projects throughout the region. Their formation springs from rigorous critical thinking and an unwavering commitment to a concept-driven design process in creating architecture. With each project, the practice examines new expressions to harmonize a regulating concept within the conditions of the site, program, inhabitants and fundamental systems. While anchoring each work in its specific circumstance, these constructs produce architecture that transcends convention. These objects ultimately become built, conceptual manifestations of core ideas guiding an exploration of scale, material, form and details. They serve as a point of departure through which a central, foundational idea… |

Gordon Matta-Clark: Splitting, 1974
Gordon Matta-Clark: Splitting, 1974 Presented by Utah Museum of Contemporary Art at Utah Museum of Contemporary Art Apr 10 - Jul 15, 2023 In Matta-Clark’s Splitting, the artist carefully slices, nearly in half, a suburban home, in Englewood, New Jersey. Part sculpture, part-video, part-architecture, the ambitious project is typical of Matta-Clark’s body of work that uses abandoned buildings as sites for intervention, offering a critique of urban renewal, creating sculptures and altered buildings as symbols of, what art historian Tom Folland calls, “a city on the verge of collapse.” Splitting is beautiful in its ruin-ness, in its destruction. Like a picturesque landscape painting dotted with ruins of a past civilization, the work weepingly echoes a hauntingly broken nostalgia. |
