Throughout my art making, I have been fascinated with the behavior of materials and creating new potentials for them. My work challenges the definition of what a painting can be and is not restricted by the mediums I use. Having been influenced by my mother and grandmother who are both avid seamstresses, I have become particularly drawn to painting with fiber, a portable medium I utilize to document life outside the studio. Painting, ceramics, soft sculpture and fiber art are all mediums I use to map memories and interpret my relationships with people, places or things I am surrounded by. I constantly find myself experimenting with objects and ideas imbued with meaning that play with my identity. My art is a form of record keeping, connecting memories from the past, present, and creating an in between.

Ricey Wright received her BFA degree from Brigham Young University in Studio Fine Art. She was formerly an assistant for the Art & Design Galleries (2019-2020) taking on curating and art handling opportunities while also managing the student-run SmartSpace galleries. She is a professional in many mediums associated with 2D art along with years of experience in sculpture and new genre. In her art, Ricey explores personal identity and the “cultural in-between” she experiences by being a half-Chinese American. She currently resides in Southern California.
