Eldon and Sandy Byland are not only a creative husband and wife team, they are also best friends. This devoted couple share almost all their interests and at the top of the list is a passion for sharing their sense of wonder with others. This is the engine behind their vast creativity. Sandy has been an award-winning fine artist for over 40 years, with work in collections around the world. She looks at creativity as an essential component in living and does not see any limit in expression, enjoying a mulititude of media to express a particular feeling or message. “I look at all forms of creative expression as one huge palette. Whether I’m writing, painting, drawing, making a film, composing or playing an instrument, it’s all the same to me and I see it as an aspect of the tools at my fingertips. I don’t see specific medias or disciplines as boundaries but as tools in my artistic toolbox.” Still, Sandy’s specialty is the fine detail, contrast and feeling that she puts into her pastels and paintings. She is a master artist of pastel, her primary media, but she is also known for her exquisite acrylics, pencil and Prismacolor works. He is a published writer, an avid amatuer astronomer and an outstanding teacher. As a gifted photographer, he concentrates on the natural world. But Eldon’s vision doesn’t end with the grand scapes of the Byland’s magnificent backyard. He also does photomicrography – that is, photography under the microscope – as well as macro-photography. An example would be insects and flowers up close and personal. This can be a very inspirational form of art. “When you look a moth in the eye, you begin to realize that consciousness and awareness exist in all life around us. It causes us to stop and think about our place in the universe.” Eldon’s photography has been both published and exhibited in gallery shows.
