The Development Associate of The Utah Shakespeare Festival is responsible for assisting the development department achieve its fundraising goals by engaging directly with donors in all phases of the fundraising cycle including prospecting, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Activities include building and sustaining donor relationships, supporting grant application planning and execution, donor database management, fundraising event support, community engagement, prospect research, and general support of all activities related to the annual fund, as well as capital and other special campaigns. In addition, the Development Associate supports the Director of Development on all aspects of fundraising. USF currently raises approximately $3.0 million annually, but seeks to increase that level of support incrementally over the next several years.
The Development Associate reports to the Director of Development and Communications. The position is year-round, full time staff and all USF employees are employed by SUU and receive full SUU employee benefits (https://www.suu.edu/ad/hr/benefits.html). General work hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. 5 p.m., with additional evening and weekend work, as required.
Utah Shakespeare Festival (USF) was founded in 1961 and is one of the oldest and largest Shakespearean festivals in North America. Located on the campus of Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah, USF enjoys significant support from the University and operates under SUU’s nonprofit umbrella.
USF resides in the beautiful Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts which opened in 2016. This impressive campus within a campus with both new and newly renovated facilities resulted from a $39M capital campaign with lead gifts of $6 million from the Sorenson Legacy Foundation and $5 million from the Engelstad Family Foundation. It is home to both USF and the Southern Utah Museum of Art. Included on The Beverly campus are the following:

Southern Utah University
Beginning as a small teacher training institution in 1897, Southern Utah University (SUU) now boasts approximately 10,000 students, 270 full-time faculty members, and another 102 adjunct-faculty. Cedar City, Utah
Home to SUU and USF, Cedar City, Utah is in the state’s southwestern corner, approximately 2.5 hours from Las Vegas and 3.5 hours from Salt Lake City. It is surrounded by national treasures, including Zion National Park, Brian Head Ski Resort, Dixie National Forest, and Bryce Canyon National Park. There are 20 National Park units within a half-day’s drive. The region enjoys a low cost of living, excellent weather and a young population. Proposed Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Support the Director of Development and Communications and the Executive Producer in the development of fundraising plans
2. Contribute to the development and maintenance of a comprehensive annual fundraising calendar including specific target dates for individual activities detailed in project management software
3. Assist in the calendaring of appointments for the Director of Development and Communications, Executive Producer, Artistic Director, members of the Board of Governors, and others as needed
4. Conduct prospect research in all areas of fundraising including attending events, conference and community activities to identify and develop relationships
5. Conduct back-office support including processing donations, managing and maintaining lists in the database and other office duties as requested
6. Meet with visiting guests and arrange/conduct backstage tours and interactions with USF artists and organizational leaders, serve as an ambassador to the Festival, including greeting guests in the lobby, at seminars, greenshows, etc.
7. Partner with the Director of Development and Communications to plan, write and submit grant applications according to the project management software schedule. Continually look for new grant opportunities that fit the Festival’s mission
8. In coordination with the Director of Development and Communications, help manage special events such as USF Galas (Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Cedar City), on-site fundraising events, spring and fall appeal and assist in the creation of future events
9. Provide written content for development materials as needed
Proposed Education and Experience Requirements:
1. 2 years experience in fundraising, preferably in the arts or related field, or equivalent educational and/or professional training
2. Bachelor’s degree in the arts or related field
3. Experience in developing and managing donor relationships
4. Experience with and knowledge of fundraising software
5. Experience in grant planning, writing, budgeting and reporting
6. Eagerness to work in a high energy, collaborative environment
7. Willingness to frequently work evenings and weekends, especially during summer months
1. Commitment to relationship building and the development of long-term relationships
2. Experience and knowledge of Moves Management
3. MFA in arts administration, or related field/degree
4. 3-5 years professional experience in the development office of an arts (or similar) organization/business
5. Coursework or other professional training in fundraising, particularly related to the arts
6. Knowledge or experience in public policy
