4th Floor Gallery at the Utah State Capitol
CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS

ABOUT THE SPACE

The Utah State Capitol is the house of government for the state of Utah. The building houses the chambers and offices of the Utah State Legislature, the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, State Treasurer, the State Auditor and their staff.

The 4th Floor Gallery at the Utah State Capitol is both an exhibit space and a functional pathway for the public to enter the House and Senate Chamber galleries (chamber viewing areas). Being at the top level of the Capitol interior, the gallery/walkway overlooks the rotunda and receives ample filtered natural light from the vast ceiling of skylights..

The Capitol welcomes 200,000 visitors to the Capitol, on average, each year. Of this number, approximately 44,000 are elementary and middle school students and the remaining 156,000 are tourists and local visitors.

PROPOSAL & SELECTION

The Capitol's 4th Floor Gallery is interested in exhibition proposals that feature Utah's landscapes, architecture, or its history and heritage. Proposed exhibits should celebrate or honor a theme in a respectful non-subjective or political manner, with content suitable for Utah State Capitol visitors.

Artwork on the 4th floor is primarily 2D work hung from  picture rails. Each artwork cannot  weigh more than 30 pounds in total weight (including frame.). Due to the large crowds and foot traffic, artworks should not exceed 2 inches in relief depth.

The Capitol Preservation Board and the Visual Arts Committee will review and select proposals for the gallery. Quality, completion, and clarity of the proposal as well as media, reach, and content submitted will all be considered. Exhibition proposals must be unique and specific for the Utah State Capitol 4th Floor Gallery. The Capitol Preservation Board reserves the right to make final decisions on which works will be placed on exhibition.

Artists whose proposal is selected for exhibition will receive honoraria as follows.

  • $500 provided to artists selected for a solo exhibition
  • $200 provided to each artist in a group exhibition (3 artists max)
