The Community Conversations program at Utah Humanities was created in 2015 with the belief that facilitated conversation engages a community better than rhetoric and argument. The humanities help us understand ourselves and other people, foster social justice and inclusivity, and give us tools for community healing and global transformation. We believe that, along with an understanding of the Humanities, the skills to guide conversations toward better understanding are essential to building a healthier and more empathetic world, whether they happen in the workplace, community, or in the home.

CERTIFICATION OVERVIEW

Learn how to facilitate reflective, empathetic, and difficult topical conversations through a humanities lens with this new professional development opportunity from Utah Humanities. We invite Utah nonprofit organizations and other professionals to participate in a year-long experience which will include hands-on involvement in live conversations open to the public and a two-day intensive training on facilitating difficult conversations. Individuals who attend and participate in at least 4 approved virtual or in-person Utah Humanities Conversations between February and December 2022 as well as the two-day training (held August 11-12, 2022) will receive a certificate of completion in Facilitating Reflective Conversations from Utah Humanities. You will also become part of a network of trained facilitators throughout the state where you can communicate with each other about your own work and ideas for programming. Utah Humanities holds at least one virtual Community Conversation per month, usually on a weekday evening at 6:30pm. You can find a list of our events on our website. If there are public conversation events led by other organizations that applicants would like to attend, they can be approved with two weeks’ notice on a case-bycase basis to count toward the 4 required conversations.

CERTIFICATION APPLICATION AND COST

This first year will be open only to non-profit professionals or community-minded individuals. We ask that participants commit to the program with a $150 participation fee, as well as agreeing to organize and facilitate a community conversation in partnership with Utah Humanities, within 6 months of the end of the training. Scholarships are available. Contact Caitlin McDonald at mcdonald@utahhumanities.org for more information. Apply for the program here. Applications will be accepted through Friday, February 4, 2022, and applicants will be notified no later than February 11, 2022.
