Job Description

Summer 2019

The Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah (HEAL) is hiring a Development Director to work with our staff, board, and supporters to continue building one of Utah’s most successful statewide grassroots environmental advocacy organizations. HEAL is in a solid financial position and poised for growth—of its budget and campaigns—and this hire will be an important part of taking the next step. We’re looking for someone who is passionate, organized, and enthusiastic.

Strategic Development and Fundraising Management

Create strategic fundraising plans and goals that include grants, major and regular donors, business and individual partnerships, fundraising events, and manage activities to meet those objectives
Prepare the annual fundraising budget targets and calendar
Chair and organize the work of the HEAL Board Fundraising Committee to review, augment, and help execute fundraising plans
Guide and assist HEAL staff and all board members in carrying out fundraising responsibilities

Grant Management

Adopt and maintain the annual grant milestones calendar that includes application and reporting preparation periods and deadlines.
Oversee the preparation of grant proposals and reports (narrative and financial) working with the Executive Director and other staff as needed
Research and pursue new funding sources for general support or specific issue campaigns or projects
Maintain relationships with contacts from granting organizations.
Track the status of all grant proposals and maintain foundation files

Membership and Donors

Manage all aspects of donor relationships, working with the Administrative Assistant to properly categorize, record, and acknowledge donations
Work with the Communications and Outreach Associate to oversee the development, promotion, and execution of annual fundraising appeal messaging and events
Conduct analysis of donor recruitment and retention activities to plan how best to recruit a new, younger and more diverse supporters while also cultivating and retaining current donors
Expand HEAL Utah’s donations from major donors, regular members, foundations, business partnerships and on-line and social media giving programs

 

Special Events

Oversee the overall planning and execution of HEAL Utah’s major annual fundraising events, which currently include a Spring Breakfast and a Fall Party
Work with the Board Fundraising Committee, board members, donors, and staff to plan and coordinate smaller gatherings and strategic meetings for major donors, business allies, and monthly donors over the course of the year.

Database and documentation management

Manage the membership/donor database (Salsa CRM)
Generate thank you calls and cards and annual tax summaries for donors
Oversee the apportionment of expenses to campaigns and funding sources

Operational Management/Financial Reporting

Assist with some administrative duties as a backup, in coordination with the Executive Director and Administrative Assistant

Qualifications

Applicants must be passionate about HEAL Utah’s mission and campaigns to protect public health and the environment. This position is a good fit for individuals who are self-motivated, well-organized, detail-oriented, comfortable working independently, socially outgoing, able to multi-task, and willing to take initiative. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to quickly learn and use software, and feeling at ease interacting with the public is a must. A college degree is required. At least two years fundraising, development or grassroots experience is preferred, but internship and volunteer work may count for those who meet the other qualifications described above.

Salary and Benefits

The Development Director is a 40-hour per week, regular full-time position, with some occasional evening and weekend activities.  HEAL is offering $45,000-$50,000 in salary per year, depending upon skills and experience. The position includes an excellent benefit package including 18 days of paid time off (covering vacation and sick leave), 12 holidays, fully-covered individual health and dental premiums, a company-funded HSA, up to a 3% employer match of IRA employee contributions, 12 weeks of paid/unpaid family leave for qualifying events, and a one-month paid sabbatical after 5 years. The range for the total compensation package is therefore $53,000-$58,000.
