Job Summary
The position dual reports to UtahPresents (75%) and the School of Music (25%). UP: performs one of many or all tasks associated with theater technical work including stage carpentry, scene painting, lighting, audio, rigging, prop making and costuming. SOM : manages Gardner Hall stage management team and coordinates activities of space users to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the facility’s performance spaces. Additionally, the position oversees the use of the Libby Gardner Hall lighting system.
Responsibilities
•Prepares sound and runs soundboard for rehearsals/performances for UtahPresents and Kingsbury Hall. Inspects, maintains and inventories sound equipment.
•Supervises part-time crews during hang, focus, and set-up of sound/lighting and runs sound/light board or rehearsals and performances.
•Climbs ladders, moves heavy scenery pieces, and works with a wide variety of power tools.
•Supervises student assistants in apprentice positions.
SOM :
•Recruits, hires, trains, and schedules the School of Music Stage Managers/Building Representatives.
oCoordinates set up & clean-up for concerts, events, rehearsals, etc.
oCoordinates lighting and sound system usage, including board operation during rehearsal and events
•Coordinates with SOM Facilities Coordinator on space use, equipment needs, and stage manager scheduling.
•Works with UP Event Manager to request Ushers for School of Music ticketed productions in Libby Gardner Concert Hall.
•Functions as Stage Manager/Building Representative/Lighting Supervisor as needed.
•Responsible for the maintenance, training, and safe use of lighting equipment in Libby Gardner Hall.
•Maintains equipment in Libby Gardner Concert Hall and organization of the back-stage area.
•Sets standard for calm behavior backstage under potentially stressful conditions.
•Directly coordinates emergency and evacuation procedures. This position has the authority to stop a performance in progress for issues of safety of the performers or the audience.
•Inspects equipment used by each renter and provides information to administration for use fees, and damages, if necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency and 4 – 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required. Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred. Two years of full-time professional experience in one or all of the above listed technical theatrical skills is required.
