Time frame: Approximately 20 hours a week as needed

Can you spell correctly WITHOUT using spell check? Are you a master of American English grammar? Do you take pleasure in correcting punctuation? Are you a wiz at syntax? Do you have an abiding enthusiasm for natural and cultural resources? If you answered yes to all of the preceding questions, then the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation has an exciting opportunity for you as an EDITOR.

Examples of Duties

As an EDITOR for the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation you will:

  • Be responsible for producing error-free articles, documents, signage, exhibit text and other written forms of communication.
  • Adhere to Division of Parks and Recreation Style Guide.
  • Research and fact check all materials.
  • Rewrite unclear or incorrect copy.
  • Write high quality, original copy as assigned.
  • Work closely with Division of Parks and Recreation Graphic Designer, Interpretation Resources Manager, Park and Program Managers and other Parks’ staff to produce the highest quality textual projects possible.

    Job Requirements and Skills

A bachelors degree in English, Business English, Journalism, Technical Writing, Communications, Creative Writing or related field with training in editing is required. A master’s degree in one of these fields is preferred.
5+ years editing experience including experience in editing natural and cultural resource articles, government rules and regulations, informational brochures, exhibit text, and similar written works is preferred.
Command of Microsoft Word, and experience with other MS programs and collaborative editing platforms a plus.
Exceptional organizational skills and ability to work effectively under pressure and establish or shift priorities under tight deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal skills, commitment to teamwork and an ability to work gently and affably with people who are not professional writers.
A talent for turning rough writing into polished prose and lissome legalese.
Obsessive research and fact-checking skills.
