Position Description

Mountain Time Arts (MTA), a Bozeman, Montana-based, 501c3 nonprofit, is seeking an Executive Director (ED) to lead the organization into its next phase of growth. Since its founding in 2015, MTA has become nationally-recognized for developing innovative and impactful place-based arts programming. MTA advocates for and produces public artworks that advance social and environmental justice in southwestern Montana. With an annual budget of $300K, MTA is poised to build on its past successes and expand its programming.

 

Summary of Position

Working closely with the MTA Board of Directors and staff, the ED will manage the overall success of MTA, particularly its fundraising, communications, planning and arts programming. She/He/They will lead MTA’s mandate of equity and inclusion with our region’s diverse populations, including Indigenous and under-represented communities.

MTA seeks a visionary leader with a successful record in fundraising, organizational management, community outreach, and arts programming. They will exercise initiative, be analytical as well as innovative, and collaborate effectively with a wide range of project participants, as well as the BoD, staff, volunteers, and community partners.

 

Character and Qualifications

A strong candidate will have the experience and desire to work with a diverse and collaborative team. He/She/They will be able to interact closely with community stakeholders, partner organizations and the BoD. They will be motivated to navigate multiple fields, including the arts; social and environmental justice; and civic and community engagement.

 

Responsibilities

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

The ED will grow current relationships and establish new links with the following sectors: stakeholders from our urban, Indigenous and rural communities, artists and project participants, foundations, governments, environmental organizations, and thought leaders. Their advocacy for the arts will ensure strong relationships in the communities in which MTA works and initiate partnerships with arts and other organizations

Management responsibilities will include leading the strategic recruitment, development, and recognition of a dedicated staff, supporting the growth of the BoD, and maintaining a positive and productive work environment. They will prepare annual reviews to assess current capacities and opportunities for growth within the team.

 

FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNICATIONS

Working with the BoD and staff, the ED will oversee fundraising and development, including growing foundation and individual giving, government support, and corporate sponsorship, and implementing annual and special fundraising events. They will work to ensure compliance with grants, non-profit fundraising guidelines, and annual reports. The ED will also drive the direction of communications, including web presence, social media, and media relations, to create meaningful messaging about MTA’s mission and values.

 

ARTS PROGRAMING

The ED will collaborate with staff, curators, educators, and the BoD towards effective development and implementation of existing and new programs, which include site-specific installations, exhibitions, and research-based collaborative projects. MTA aspires to widen its educational public programming, including community dialogues, learning labs, and arts training programs to an increasingly diverse audience and participant base. Programming will benefit from consistent evaluation of impact, including collecting qualitative and quantitative information on participation and reporting on performance metrics.

 

FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION

The ED will work with the BoD, treasurer, and staff to oversee financial management to ensure organizational stability, including budgeting, reporting, and oversight of accounting functions. They will provide effective information to facilitate informed decisions, policy, fundraising, and financial management, and will develop effective systems to track progress toward strategic goals.

 

PLANNING

The ED will work with the BoD to update the business plan; and with the MTA team to identify strengths, challenges, and opportunities, and to develop and execute steps necessary to attain short and long-term goals.

 

Experience

MTA seeks an Executive Director with experience in growing a non-profit arts or cultural organization, including demonstrated success in fundraising, marketing, and public relations. Strong abilities in program development, financial management and planning, and excellent communication skills, including with diverse communities, will be valuable assets.

Five or more years of related professional experience is required, and a relevant educational background is preferred. We welcome a person with strong ties to and/or demonstrated ability in working with Indigenous and under-represented communities.

 

Compensation

Salary and benefits commensurate with experience. Compensation range: $75,000–$100,000
