Job Description 

Are you looking for an opportunity to help communities throughout the state preserve and re-use their historic buildings? The Department of Cultural & Community Engagement is seeking a Technical Historic Preservation Specialist to work in the Utah Division of State History/State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). This position will assist and advise historic building owners on appropriate techniques for maintaining and preserving historic buildings. We are accepting applications from recent graduates, entry-level, experienced and retired professionals. The State of Utah also allows for flexible work schedules and locations.

Principal Duties
As the Technical Historic Preservation Specialist you will typically:

  • Provide technical assistance on appropriate rehabilitation methods that comply with the "Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation."
  • Assist with the state and federal historic tax credit programs, especially related to the more technical aspects of historic building rehabilitation (structural issues, appropriate products and techniques, building codes, etc.).
  • Assess architectural conditions and provide recommendations for buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places for Certified Local Governments (CLGs), Main Street communities and individual property owners.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to architects, contractors, local building officials and others on historic preservation issues related to building preservation and rehabilitation.
  • Provide technical assistance to the Utah Division of Facilities and Construction Management (DFCM) and other state agencies on state-owned historic buildings, including the Governor's Mansion, State Park properties, university buildings, etc.; assist with technical reviews of federal undertakings affecting historic buildings.
  • Support Division of State History projects and programs as needed.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal person for this position is someone who has:

  • A degree in Architecture or Architectural Design is preferred but degrees in Historic Preservation, Engineering, Construction, or a closely related field will be considered.
  • Work experience creating or reviewing technical historic preservation project information, architectural drawings, specifications, and/or Historic Structures Reports.
  • Experience with the "Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties" and providing related treatment recommendations.
  • Understanding of building codes and how they can be applied to historic buildings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with a broad range of partners and clients with varied social and cultural backgrounds and all levels of professional expertise in the agency's historic preservation programs.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • The ability to travel throughout the state; occasional overnight travel required.
