In August 2016 the newest American Girl doll was released: Melody, a young black girl living in Detroit during the Civil Rights Movement. Rebecca de Schweinitz, BYU history professor and author of If We Could Change the World: Young People and America’s Long Struggle for Racial Equality, served as an historical advisor and helped to create the look of the doll, her accessories, and the books that tell Melody’s story.
