There’s a saying that goes like this: “If you shoot for the moon and miss, you’ll still land among the stars!” To Marybeth, our Community Education Director, this saying perfectly describes what it’s like to enter homegrown veggies at the fair. You may not win that big rosette or fancy blue ribbon, but even if you don’t, you’ll have tons of fun trying! And if you DO win big, then you’ll have bragging rights forever! If you’ve entered the agricultural exhibits at the fair before but not come home decorated in ribbons, or if you’ve never tried because you’re just not sure how to go about it, this workshop is for you! We’ll talk about some strategies for choosing varieties to grow for the fair, how much space to allocate in your garden, and the basic steps of entering the fair. Marybeth will reveal her top 5 secrets for winning lots of ribbons (even if some of them aren’t blue!).
Then, on September 6th, join us for the companion workshop, Blue Ribbon Vegetable Gardening: Harvest and Entry Prep (separate registration required), where we’ll select the best produce from the demo garden and then meet over at the State Fair Park to enter our best picture-perfect veggies into competition.
