Artists in this workshop will explore the basics of the mixed media of Oil Paint, and Cold wax, powdered pigments, and other materials. We will create abstract layers through textures, lines and colored fields that we can then mine through developing our own personal palimpsest of the history of our own mark making. This rich medium helps generate a space for the artist to create intentional layers and discover the unintentional layers of abstraction. In three days we will cover plenty of information about technique, conversation on concept and composition, along with plenty of time to work.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
My intentions for this class is to introduce you to the materials of Oil and Cold wax and all the different techniques that are available for mark making in this process. I want to give you as much information as I can as well as plenty of time to work. I like to approach workshops with the intent of participants leaving with fresh ideas and techniques to take back to your studio as oppose to leaving with completed work. I find this approach generates a lot of space to be free to explore. This is a loose Itinerary, as I want to leave space for the class to develop organically. Some structure with some chaos if you will!
On the first day, we’ll begin with a discussion about the materials we will be working with. We will create small paintings on paper, exploring different mark making materials and how the oil and cold wax respond. We will explore several different mark making techniques and generate a library of these small paintings.
On the second day we will respond to these small paintings and explore moving onto the wood substrates in a larger format.
Our last day will be a day of painting and discussion about the Oil and Cold Wax Process.
