Convergence

“Convergence” is a performance featuring 6 new contemporary ballet works by professional choreographer and co-artistic director Shani Robison, set on three of Utah’s professional companies, Chrysalis Ballet, Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company and Imagine Ballet Theatre, and studio company Central Utah Ballet’s Senior Company. Additionally, works will be presented by choreographers Jennie Creer-King and Brian Reeder, performed by Central Utah Ballet’s Senior and Junior companies.

“Convergence” is a literal converging of Shani’s career and work as she has focused throughout her time as a dance artist and choreographer on the contemporary ballet style that pushes dancers, particularly balletically-trained dancers, in movements and partnering that utilizes but expands the ballet genre. For this performance she has had the additional opportunity to work with specifically contemporary-trained professional dancers to further broaden her choreographic reach in style and approach.

After a long 19-year career as a tenured professor at BYU, Shani has shifted to a new chapter of directing, teaching, and choreographing outside of higher education this year. Winning the 2023 Rocky Mountain Festival has given her the opportunity to show the creative converging point at which she has reached thus far in her career, setting professional work outside of and beyond BYU, as she expands and launches to new and exciting future opportunities.
