Creativity in Focus Film Series, Burden

A probing portrait of Chris Burden, an artist who took creative expression to the limits and risked his life in the name of art.

Chris Burden guaranteed his place in art history in 1971 with a period of often dangerous and at times stomach-churning performances. This film explores the artist’s works and private life through an innovative mix of videos performances, personal recordings, and latter-day footage at his studio—all peppered with his thoughts and musings through the years.

Directed by Richard Dewey and Timothy Marrinan
88 min | 2016 | USA/UK/Belgium/Sweden | Not Rated

INDIVIDUAL DATES & TIMES*

Additional time info:

Following the screening of Burden we are pleased to share recently recovered footage (26 min.) of Oh, Dracula—a Chris Burden performance at the UMFA in 1974. The unknown filmmaker, perhaps a University of Utah student, captured behind-the-scenes details, the original Museum building (now home to the Film and Media Arts department), and wonderfully candid interviews reflecting on this incredible, durational performance.
